Hi all,

It’s in Italian, but the pictures show everything
http://www.renatoc.it/Modellismo/Mie...lunarossa.html
The sailboat is the Luna Rossa
He took 3 years to build it !

If you turn off your javascrip, then you can have google translate this page
http://www.renatoc.it/Modellismo/Mie...truzione2.html
(otherwise the site uses a stupid scrip to redirect you back to the frame'd site)

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
I have to drool along with you Jim....
The nature of this beast makes it a lightweather boat though, I would not have much pleasure with it where I sail.
Regards, Jan.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Jan, what's the latest on your boat, sails and adventures? Were you going to paint your boat? Pictures? How about that new keel? Did it help?
You're going to be our leading authority on sailing in heavy winds it sounds like! That must be frustrating for many days, at least until you figure out a sail combination and learn to sail it.
Don't keep all your hard won knowledge to yourself, Jan.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Well, apart from sailing my Voyager for a few hours every day for the past weeks, developements are limited to planning ahead.
I've waited with changes on the boat till after tomorrow, when I'm going to sail her at a regatta in Sandstedt (Germany).
Having read about casting your own bulb, and the dangers of it, I think I'll pass on that (had enough health issues lately...) and go for a stainless steel bulb, made on the lathe.
As I have acces to a lathe, I can make different shapes and see what works best on my Voyager.
Downside of using ss instead of lead is the lesser density, so the volume will have to be greater, I'll see how it works out.
The new keel is 7 cm, 2,75" longer than the stock one, made out of carbon (very stiff!), so maybe I'll get away with roughly the same volume as the stock bulb, but lighter.
The new mast is still leaning in the corner, I want to have all the parts and fitting ready before taking the stock mast off (and be unable to sail for a while).
Having to build things from scratch always takes more time in planning ahead than the actual work.
The new mast is stiff and strong, and I don't want to drill holes for the spreaders, weakening it, so I have to work around that, suggestions are welcome.
On the other hand, the stock spreaders áre drilled through the mast and I'm amazed at the abuse it takes, so maybe I'm being too carefull....
As the new mast is going to be 4" longer, I'm looking at new sails aswell (bring out the sewing machine!)
The wife and I have given eachother a digital camera for our bithday(s), so future updates will be recorded.
Regards, Jan.
P.S. I've received the plans for the Luna Rossa and am seriously thinking of building her, and reduce the rigg for the local conditions.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Jan, it certainly sounds like you've been busy! And you've got to be learning a lot about boats. I don't know all the mathematics of it but I wonder with that longer keel if you will need as much weight? As the keel lengthens, is the same weight necessary? Or, to put this another way, if you used your original keel (and weight) surely you would gain MORE effect because of the length? A stainless keel would sure be pretty...but obviously lighter.
If your new mast is CF, can you drill holes for your spreaders and epoxy them in place and via the epoxy almost regain the original strength? Or will epoxy even stick to CF?
Obviously I'm shooting in the dark here.[&:]
Don't listen to me, Jan. But I'm glad you got a digi camera. They sure make taking pictures and sharing them a snap. If you email them as .jpeg files, they are so small that they go over the net in a flash. Email me some good stuff.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Pecos,
It's 9 AM here... the weather is not so great...lot's of "heavy" coulds....
And I'm going to sail with the guys that make the PortWind and the "famous" Alinghi replica sailboat.
As you know, I'm a very curious person...
They are going to be filled with tons of questions...
he he he
How to..
Where ...
Why...
Making of hulls
Making of sails
Types of material
etc etc
Hope to be back at 7 PM...
btw... does anyone saw the Emirates NZL Team (http://emiratesteam-com.axiion.com/index.html)
nice paint job
Regards,
ICE

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Hi all,
Strong winds stopped the fun of our 2 sailboats (Voyager and the Alinghi).
The Alinghi could sail very well but it was too risky.
Mine (Voyager) did not stand a chance, broken mast strings and a hard time trying to turn the boat.
Nevertheless, lot's of fun... and technical advise..
Regards,
ICE
PS: Me is Orange lol

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
The sailboat is ready for action again...
But tomorrow I need to replace some items on the boat...
And start thinking about making new sails and some carbon fibre options...
The Seawind is taking to long to arrive
grr

The Seawind is worth the wait, Ice. It's a beautiful kit with good parts. You'll enjoy building it. Only fault I've found are some of the instructions are not only dumb...but incorrect. The Japanese don't understand some English verbs apparently and several places they tell you to do one thing when they mean for you to do the exact opposite.[X(] But the boat goes together fast. Just take your time and make her pretty.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
Ice, I'm using the stock Seawind sails as do most Seawind skippers. So I can't help you there. I think they are actually pretty good sails. A lot of the Seawind sailors have tried custom sails and they all say the improvement over stock sails is hard to measure, if any.

Wis - I wasn't trying to be critical of the Japanese at all with my comments about the instructions. I was just stating a fact. For example, at one place in the directions it states "mount the transmitter so that it WILL BIND on the rudder servo. And I saw a couple of others.
As my understanding of Japanese is zip, if I tried to write an instruction booklet for a Japanese consumer...... well, let's not go there.
My point was simply to warn builders to be alert for some serious grammatical errors.
I have nothing but praise for the kit. Compared to other model kits I've seen, this one is a champ.

RE: How to build a Luna Rossa
kit sails become good when they get old...they stretch...but telling that panelled sails offer almost nothing compare to the kit's...well first you need to test a few
I have had, the kits, Walrus, Carrsails and now TWR...and actually made a few of my own...I would never go back to the kits...sure its not class legal...but as being almost alone..who cares ?
Cheers
