RE: Nimbus Mk 111
The Nimbus is a one meter class racing sail boat designed by Graham Bantock, I obtained the plans from Traplet magazines. The hull is built from 10mm x 3mm cedar strip planks, obtaining cedar in the UK was a big problem I found.
Each plank was cut with a circular saw and then planed to size, the photo is of the planking up as it neared the keel, each plank needed to be steamed in order fit the contour of the hull.
The hull is now finished, I am now working on the ballast keel moulding and will post more pics as it progresses.

Sorry about that, hit the reduction button twice! This pic is of the final plank being fitted, the outline was traced on paper prior to the plank being cut to size.

The moulding for the 2.5 Kilo ballast keel cast in household filler.
The mould screwed together ready for the lead.
Ballast keel as it came out of the mould.
The keel fitted to the fin ready for finishing.

EXCELLENT work, John! Seriously. You're going to have a beautifully hand made boat when the smoke clears from this project. I can't wait to see you unveil it.

Don, how is the Dragon comming along. No pics recently. I am a big fan of the wooden boats. I think they look great. I may work my nerve up and attempt one, but first I have to finish my CR 914. Its taking forever to get it done.

RE: Nimbus Mk 111
Hi guy's here is the latest pic of the Nimbus, as you can see it is progressing, the hull has been sheathed in fine glass cloth on the outside the inside had two coats of epoxy resin plus reinforcing ribs of glass weave cloth. The central structure comprising of the fin and mast boxes and mounting area for the radio and servo gear is now epoxied in place and the hull has taken on a good ridged feel.
From the aspect of good looks I have decided to plank the decks with cedar rather than use ply as recommended in the plans, if it gains a little weight I guess I can live with it.

Simply beautiful, John. Nothing else to say about it. You've really done a work to be proud of. As this is a one meter boat, I'm curious about weight. What does it weigh thus far and what is your final target weight?
I'm sure I speak for all when I say we can't wait to see it on the water trailing a nice wake.

Larry, your Nimbus looks fantastic! There are a ton of questions I would like to ask you, but I am due down at the lake shortly it’s 9.45 a.m. here and we have a one meter open meeting this weekend.
I am going to mail you later hope that you can find time to talk a little.

Hi Pecos........... The ballast keel and fin weigh 2.5 kg the overall weight of the boat should not be less than 4kg, if I can keep it at 4.5 to 5kg I rekon that I will be happy.

RE: Nimbus Mk 111
Here we have the deck being laid, I have found that you just can't have enough of those rachet clamps, and would sugest that you have a good many if you are contemplating a similar build.
The winch, rudder servo and linkage are all now in and tested.

RE: Nimbus Mk 111
Certainly am Pecos, the decks are now laid, the hull is all ready for finishing and fitting out.
I am having trouble making up my mind about if to make my own sails or have them custom made, seems that there is six weeks delivery on custom made seems like a lifetime, lol.

I don't think we can wait that long, John. Let's do both. You make some to get you going AND order you a nice custom set. (Forgive me for the preceeding remark if you make sails as well as you build boats. If that is the case, forget the "custom sails.")
