Default RE: Northwind 36

Finished painting the hard wear and putting some of them togeather befor attaching them to the hull like the cleets, tackle, winches, and helm wheels. I also finished painting, masking and airburshing the design I drew up for the hull. Put on a couple coats of dark blue paint on the keel and rudder to match the hull. The battery packs for the servos arrived a few days ago and did some libral sodering to attach it to the correct coupler. Had to shave the side of the S3801 servo to make it fit in the radio controle reciever. Still waiting for the push rods and push rod sealers to arrive to attach the rudder to the rudder servo. Epoxyed the servo cradle into the hull and setup the recievers attena. Didnt glue it down so removel and mantaice will be easier when swiching channel chips (or what ever everyone calls them). The reciever sites in its little box losly, but high and dry. Won't come out unless the boat accually capsizes. Isn't gravity a wonderful thing. Installed a kiwik switch and charging jack kit switch. This will save me time and remembering to bring a screw driver to remove the hatch cover, turn it on and screw it down then repeat to turn it off. Didn't feel that the swich was water proof or pron to corosin if it got wet, (gee, imagine that on a boat). Didn't install the recharging jack hardwear because going to use AAA batterys for the boat. Can use them around the house when not using them in the boat(s). And my brother had problems with recharable batterys with his rc cars that just seemed like more trouble then they were worth the cost then buying regualr alkiline batterys when I need them. I epoxyed the rudder controle arm to the rudder. I put a washer down then tighted down a nut to the rudder bar. Placed the controle arm and epoxyed it down. I figured that if I need to remove the rudder it should screw off. I was reading in another form post of people losing thier rudders and keels. How do you manage that?? I use a wrinch to thighten the nuts on this boat and doubt that it would work its way free of the boat.
Here are some links to the lattest pictures of the North Wind.

Just finished epoxying togeather the blocks, cleets, wenches and helm wheels this evening. The hobby shop is sending the push rods and push rod sealing kits again since they got lost in the mail the last time. Not much other wise to do till I get the push rods and the mast.

Still waiting for the carbon fiber tube to arrive for the mast. Ordered some extra rigging line for the racing sails I'm making out of drafting mylar. They seem to be no heavyer then the nylon sails that came with the north wind and hold thier shape well. On the pluse side they don't need sewing. But while drilling pilot holes for the screws for the clets, blocks and mast foot drilled too deep on those back two blocks. Had to epoxy the holes closed and repaint the stern. Screwed down the clets, blocks, mast foot and rigging things. The band saw I got off ebay arrived and works well on cutting the fiberglass for the servo arms works well. The band saw cuts slowly and comes off often, but I seem to think it saves me more time and work then if I didn't have it. While the wood cutting with it for the sail storage box I'm building from an idea I saw in the northwind group in yahoo is going fast and will probly have it finished by latter tonight. So while waiting for the rigging line from *********.com and the carbon tub from kitebuilder.com I'm waiting for some more push rods from towerhobbies.com. While the push rod sealing kits are to large for use on the rc yachts I can probly resell them on ebay. So done till some things come in for the north wind and will work on making a extra set of sails. The first set look fine and are pretty much for learning how to cut, tape and rige for the boats.

The masts came in the middle of last week. The inside diameter was smaller then the boom cranes tab that slides into the mast. So I cut it off and drilled into the crane, epoxy ed a piece of the parts tree that fit into the carbon tube. Also discovered that when putting on the main sail boom goose neck to allow some room for the nut on the bottom goose neck. Anyway cutting the mast to the correct size with the sail on and then hooking up the rigging took some time, but went by fast. Did drill out the line stays because the painting closed them up to where I couldn't thread it through the stays. When all finished it looks great. I set up the control when turned on the sails would be slack at 90 degress till I pulled them in to catch the wind. Waiting for a good day to take to the pond and try her out. Its been raining lately, but looks good for latter in the week for taking it out. Will post pics soon.

All finshed with the North Wind and waiting for a nice day to sail her on her maiden voyage. Now for the latest photos of the boat being finished up. If you can see I used wire to make the hardwar for the booms and epoxyed onto the carbon tubes for the booms and mast.

Hi everyone.
Hey Bobslr try taking off the keel and rudder and strap on a set of skates and make it a ice boat. :-)
Took Gibli (Gibli is a hot wind that comes off the Sahara and across the Mediterranean to Italy), out today for her maiden voyage. Although there was little wind, it went around the lake twice. The lake is nicly filtered here at the top of the parks hill with the winery's and vineyards in the back ground. Makes for an excellent atmosphere to sail. Hoping more will take up sailing so we can open a amya chapter here. The only thing is that there are jets in the lake to funnel the lakes water toward the filter and makes some areas tricky to navigate. But on the positive side there are no water grasses, Lillis or reeds to get hung up in. There where a couple nitro boats racing about me today. The second North Wind I built I call Santa Anna ofter the strong winds that blow in the fall in Southern California(the boat with the red comet on the side of the hull). Anyway here are the pics from this afternoon. Enjoy

HI
Really nice picture's,Wait until you've got some practice and a good breeze she'll really fly.
I'm amazed at the number of people that ask me what kind of motor I have in my boat ,because they don't believe it's that fast on sail's alone or that the sail's are actually functional.
Look's like a really nice lake you have to sail in,The lake I sail on is in a park that's over a hundred year's old with really big tree's all around so the wind is some times a little patchy.
Anyway I really enjoyed watching your build and look foreward to seeing your new project.
My project for the winter is a Midwest Cranberry Isle Lobster Yacht,It's going slow right now because I'd like to make some modification's but have'nt figured out all the detail's

Yes. Had many people, especially children ask if it had a motor. The lake is on top of a hill and not many trees grow on the top of hills because of the limited rain fall we get here. And the few planted about the lake are all liquid amber which won't break the wind any for years and years if ever. All the large oak trees in the park are below in the ravine.

Sailed the second North Wind friday afternoon after fixing the crain from the priviouse days high winds damage. The crain broke off so I drilled out the crain and epoxyed in a piece of carbon tube in to the mast and the crain head fits over the piece of tube. It worked really well. The boat raced back and forth and the bow diped below the surface of the lake seveal times. It looked like water came in through the hatch cover. I've taken some foam rubber padding used for rc cars and cut them into strips. Taking the double sided tape I put the strips on the hatch and hope that with it screwed down the leaking will stop. Did manage to smack a rock on the way in and broke the keel bulb loose. Re-epoxyed and fiberglass cloth the keel again, but more liberaly this time. Spent the afternoon doing that repair and working on the new boats. Avoiding the shopping thing this weekend. Most Christmas shopping done, just need some cards. Anyway check on the latest I did this weekend on the newest boat at the Blackhawk forum.

Hi
Wanted to take the Santa Anna out this afternoon. I got to the park and the wind was just to strong. A storm is coming in for the next few days and wanted to check out the repairs and adjustments before the storm gets here. I've repaired and epoxy ed the keel bulb with a more generous piece of fiberglass cloth. Sanded and repainted you can't tell that it was whacked by a rock. Also took in some of the control line by wrapping it once around the cleat near the stern that it is anchored to. I cut some foam rubber that I picked up at the hobby shop that is used on rc cars for padding called HPI Pro Tire Foam Stripes. Don't know what they use these for but anyway I cut them down into 1/8 inch strips. Using the double sided tape I use for sail making and put it down around the underside of the hatch to make it water tight. Since last time I believe the water came in that way. It didn't run out from the keel or rudder posts so those I know are water tight. So have to put off till latter this weekend the re-sailing of this boat. Working on the blackhawk is going well.

I have been in Paso Robles several times, but I have never seen the lake in your photos.
Can you provide directions to the lake? We visit the central coast and stay in Posmo Beach.
Thanks

Took the second North Wind 36 I had buildt out to the lake Sunday
afternoon. The wind was a nice breeze coming out of the west. Not
like the hard North winds that whiped up the lake Friday when I went
out there to see about sailing. The boat cut back and forth across
the lake quick and smartly. I had several spectators watching it
tack back and forth, around and about the lake. The repairs to the
keel and deck worked out great. When I got her back home there was
no water inside it. Last time I took it out it was very windy and
had was driven under the a couple times. I had picked up some foam
rubber tire gards and cut them into 1/8 inch strips. Using double
sided sticky tape to attach them to the under side lipe of the hatch
cover I created a water tight seal I hoped. It seemed to have
worked. Also epoxyed the starboard controle line hole closed and
epoxyed around the push rods to make the holes smaller where they
enter the boat. The keel had to be reworked from the last time I had
taken it out. It had hit a rock coming in the last time and cracked
the bulb neck. It was only attached by the fiberglass cloth on the
one side of the keel. Re-epoxying it down and adding another layer
of fiberglass cloth around the bulb and up the keel this time for
aditional stregth. Sanded and repainting the keel it was good as
new. After the sailing Sunday only a few scraches from where it
grazed the bottom of the lake coming in where it's only damages. Had
to repaint the bow though. It looked like I scrached it up alot this
time. Not sure on what. I didn't ground or hit any rocks this time
Im possitive. Only could think that when I put it in I had hit the
bottom with the bow and didn't relize it.

Hi Jeff
The park is right off the 46 Highway that leads into the Central Valley from the 101 Freeway. At about the four miles from the 101 at the interscetion to the airport you turn right instead of left to the airport. Drive about twenty feet and turn left on to Union Road. The park is up a head on the right. It's not shown on mapequest, but the Thomas Bros. guide has it in thier book. The park is called Union Park and the lake is at the very top of the hill past the soccer and softball feilds near the enterance. You have to drive all the way to the top of the hill to find the lake. Stange place to build a lake, but it gets a good steady breeze and no large trees to break up the wind. Its on the way to several winerys out there along with the airport. In fact a few of the pics of the boats sailing have vinards on the hills in the back ground. I have one in my camera still that I lined up with the Chumeia Vinards big red barn on the hill with the Santa Anna sail boat I sailed Sunday. Its a bueatiful maintained lake up there. No weeds, reeds or water foul. I've meet a few people who use nitro boats up there, but no other sailing boats as of yet. One of them had put some rubber balls out there in the middle of the lake to do laps around infact. But seems one of the balls was missing this weekend. Maybe someones dog went out there and retrieved it. Would love to start a amyc chapter here and hold invantionals at the lake. Looked at Bakersfields regottas from this past year and they held them in May and June. In Bakersfield........ It's like 114 degrees out there in May, June, July and Augest out there in the central valley. I don't know about them. Would think here in Paso Robles a fall invational where everyone could just race and judge on a models building would be fun. Its great place with lots of room for many boats and winerys about to wine tast while the grape harvest is comming in if one becomes board. I'll take some pictures of the lake and whats around it and post those next time.

Hi Fishy
Let me know if its ok to email you the plans I had drawn up. If you print it out it probly wouldn't match, but it does have dimentions on it to re-draw them up from them. I used it as a starting point. I made a cradle for the servos and the radio reciver and a seprate one for the battery pack for infront of the keel post. I made it from Bass Wood which I picked up at the locale hobby shop. I reinforced it with 1/8 pine square dowl from the hardware store as well pick up carpeters water proof glue and varnish to protect the cradles after you are finsihed building them. Also add to you list to pick up at the hardware store 18 gauge rust proof wire to make the hardware for the booms and mast. You'll probly need new [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK066&P=7]push rods[/link]. I found some good ones on at tower hobbies. If you get the ones I linked to make sure you get the 4-40 [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK079&P=M]clevis set[/link] or they might not screw togeather properly. As well as new [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD668&P=ML]servo arms[/link] for the rudder. I assume you're reusing your old servo's but incase youd like to upgrade to [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXH294&P=7]Futaba S3801 Servo Heavy Duty Arm Type Sail Control[/link] is a link. I found that this is has worked best as others have recomended. I also bought a sheet of fiberglass for make a new sail servo arm from [link=http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/c+m/c+m8202.htm]hobbie inc.[/link] a sheet of fiberglass to craft the arm. If you're not re-using the plastic single cleat blocks and instead use some [link=http://www.mariner-sails.com/partdetail.asp?id=25712]PeKaBe SINGLE CHEEK BLOCK [/link] on your new servo arm. I pick them up at Mariner Sails along with dacran and seam stick tape for sail making. I good sail block can be had on ebay for a good price. I use drafting mylar from [link=https://www.pearlpaint.com/shop_details~ocID~~parentID~6935~categoryID~6934~s ku~840642.htm]30x42 .004 Single Matte Mylar Drafting Film[/link] for the sail material is excellent. It will never get wet or deform in the wind. I went to Michells Art Store to get materials for the sail battons. I could only find some clear plastic sheets used to make stain glass window patterns and double sided sticky film in the sewing dept to adhear to the plastic sheet. I then cut into the correct sizes and widths for the battons. Still looking for good fiberglass backed tape for luff tape, but so fare I've used [link=http://www.gbmy.com/csailmake.html]Great Basin Model Yachting[/link] for luff tape, ( Item #367 ) my rigging line ( Item #313 ) and Eyelet Set Punch for Small Eyelets for Sails ( Use Items #321 and #322). Also As for the mast and booms. Keep you old ones so you can aline the wire hardware you mark the new carbon fiber tube booms in the right places for rigging. Use the 18 gauge wire to make the loops for the sails and rigging. I'll link some pics soon. My pc is ill and Im using my lap top right now. If you're not using your sail that came with the kit make sail rings with your wire. Wraping wire around the old mast makes a good tool for getting the correct scale. Trim the crains sleave and drill through and epoxy in a piece of small carbon tube into the top of the mast that the modified crain fits over now. The crain head fits over this post now and will be stronger then the orginal design. Order a goose neck for joining the main sheet boom and mast. I used a [link=http://www.victor-model.com/accessories.html]large victor models goose neck[/link]. Made out of brass they are more reasonable priced then others I saw at both Great Basin and Mariner Sails. For the mast I picked up from Kitebuilder.com I got my carbon fiber tubes for the masts from them. They by fare have the best price. Those who sell to rc sail boat builders mark up the tubs quite a bit. The [link=http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/1093?osCsid=98fda7baaad1c7a900f6d41754cd08b2]60 inch tube [/link] for the mast and a [link=http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/196?osCsid=98fda7baaad1c7a900f6d41754cd08b2].18 tube[/link] 29 inches long for the booms and one [link=http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/205?osCsid=98fda7baaad1c7a900f6d41754cd08b2]tube[/link] for the crain post.

boy i would have never thought my thread would have gotten this many hits [8D]

Ive had my boat out a couple of times. Last time i was out it was VERY windy and i ended up snaping some rigging. Still have a few things to do to mine. but ive had it out sailing half a dozzen times now.

OH i know what i wanted to ask.

How are you guys sealing the stock radio cover? Ill admit to half-***** in it with scotch tape like the kit says, and its worked fine albeit very clumsy. I still havent figured out an eleigent way to do it yet. (dont want to screw it on)

what have you guys done?

Addtionaly do you guys find your dragging the tailing edge of the main sail boom in the water? or am i not sailing it right?

Hi Schmism
Your thread really proofed to be popular for sure.
I used three blind nuts and 4-40 machine screws to fasten down my hatch and I've never had any water in the boat,if you don't want to screw it down I guess tapes about the only other way I can think of.
As to the main boom dragging in the water,I've found that if the boat start's to heel over more than about 35 degree's if I let the sails out a bit that help's.
There's probably some one out there that has a better answer, my NW is my first sailboat and I sailed it a lot this past summer but I'm still learning myself.

Hi
I cut some schimsim and bobslr
My main boom hardly gets wet because the wind spills out before it tips over fare enough to touch the water. I used some foam rubber tire strips for rc cars cut into 1/8 strips. I then used double sided sticky tape to adhere it to the underside lip of the hatch cover then when screwed down becomes water tight. Haven't had any water in the boat since I've modified it this way.
I've had to take some pictures off the web site that where linked here so I could put others there.
Haven't been able to get to the boats this week, been busy. Hopefully a day next week will open up for sailing or building.
