Default Victoria Mast Height

Original mast height is 42.8 inch, I lost the mast and sail recently so planning to do a new one, is it ok for me to increase the height say about 48" and then make new sail for it? Will the boat still perform ok since the sail area is increased or is there any set back by doing so? Any comments and advise appreciated and critics welcome too.

Hi David,

The taller mast with matching larger sail surface will make the boat perform better in light conditions.

With increasing wind the performance will suffer.

If that's no problem, give it a try, you can always reduce the sail, when it doesn't work out (or make a deeper keel).

No doubt these modifications will make your Victoria class-illegal, but who cares, as long as you're not sailing regatta's...

Regards, Jan.

Why will it make it worse in stronger winds? I am making my own boat, and is there any way to increse performance in stronger winds without using smaller sails? Using a longer/more towards the stern/bow/heavier keel? Thanks.
