Default Jackline

I have a mast and sail, which I am making for my new boat. The sail has a narrow pocket in it for a jackline, and the piece of wire to put down it is 0.6mm wire. The mast has a luff of 200 centimetres, and a curve of 3cm (60% up). This makes the wire curved. The pocket has 10 little gaps in it, with the wire showing, so the wire can be joined/bound to the mast. This is needed to make the mast curve. My question is, how do I attach the wire to the mast in the 10 places? I tried tying little pieces of string around the mast, but I didn’t do them tight enough. I could try again… The wire is secured at the top with a hook, and at the bottom with some tensioned elastic leading to another hook. Is this OK?

Many thanks,

Andrew

You really do not need those rings to be super tight. Just all the same size loops of line will do. Then they will rotate about the mast as you trim the sail. If they are tight against the mast, the sail will be held in place and not settle on the proper side as the boat tacks. The pre-bend of the mast will still occur if all the loops are the same size and you increase the luff tension at the bottom end of the luff wire.

Hi Andrew,

You can also take a long line, start at the top and work your way down like in the pictures. don't tension it too much and the sail will rotate nicely around the mast.
(In the background of the picture on the left you see the main on my Voyager attached in this way, works like a charm.)

Regards, Jan.

You could use Sail Luft Rings by PRO BOAT. $1.99.
It's easier to change sails.
