Default Genoa vs Jib

Hi all.

Does anyone have a thought on using a genoa as compared to using a jib?
Interested in comments on this.

Thanks for any input.

Hi.

Maximizing the sail area causes more difficult handling. It is harder to tack a genoa than a jib, since the overlapping area can become tangled with the shrouds and/or mast unless carefully tended during the tack so rigging your boat for a genoa is tricky. I prefer the jib, I have an AC class boat (78-in in length) and rigged it with a genoa, looks beautifull but if racing another issue is that it takes longer to tack.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Thanks for the input. I was just wondering as I had an old static model of Australia 2 and it had a genoa and a jib that I could swap and was just wondering about the benefits vs the draw backs.
I think I'll stick with the jib.

Thanks alot.

Running downwind also has its problems. In order to keep air in the sail you will have to gybe your way down the course while the rest of the fleet blows straight by you.[:@]

genoa's have uses on full size boats, but are impractical on models because you can't switch from the genoa to the spinnaker for down wind runs, also it complicates the sheeting arrangement because you have to have two winches. One for the mainsail, the other for the genoa, also it requires a seperate channel. It has been done before, I've seen it on an ac class once, that also had a spinnaker set up. Very complicated, didn't work well, was abandoned after a few attempts I believe.

Thanks for that kzimmerman. I have abandoned the idea as being way above my abilities.

Dave.
