Hey Surfdabbler,
I tell you the race is on mate, as I will be starting to put the deck on this weekend. Seeing that I will be using my 10 rater rigs and keel for this boat I have most of the work done and seeing that my keel will not swing there is no design work to be done either.

Hey Surfdabbler,
I have just been watching some You tube footage of a VOLVO 70 called the "pirates of the Caribbean" and it has got me pumped to build the 2m hull. So after I put the deck on the AC 12m I will start on the 70. Here is the link and I now know where old mate got his paint job for the 1.7m class yacht on this site.

till next time

Man, those boats are fast when they get going! See what a canting keel can do too - those boats are really moving, and almost totally upright. A 2m version is going to be very cool. I'm cheating on winches, but on a 2m boat, you'll need to buy some serious winches for the keel and sail.

Pirate Is Awsome

Hey Smoofty are you going to build the pirate boat and if so where do you get the prints?
I have scaled the Oracle boat to US AC class at 73inches and 106inch sail,Prints pictured below.
As seen in the pic I'm going to use foam instead of balsa!

Hey Simpros,
Yes I will be doing the Volvo 70 in the Pirate colors, As I did with my Team NZ 10 rater I will just hand paint the hull for pic's off the net. I would still like to get hold of your Oracle data files for the paint job for the next AC12.
I take it that you are going to sand the foam to shape then glass over it for the AC class boat ?.

Surfdabbler,
I will use some RMG smart winches for the 2m Vor 70. I think that they should have the power for the sheets and I'm now working on how to make the canting keel part powerful enough so it runs with the front dagger boards when the boat tacks.

till later

Hey Smoofty,

Do you have a link to the volvo hull plans? I may change my plans on the larger scale boat.
I noticed there are more drawings being posted on the newer AC boat designs and I'm leaning
more twords these. I'm glad I have a plotter or I would be spending alot of money and time at the local
print shop to scale all these plans.
Here's my email address [email protected] so I can send you the files for the Oracle and if you like me to
scale them for you just give me the size. I will also give you the information for the decal paper for the inkjet printer so you can print your own decals and then clearcoat and they look awsome.

Yes, the RNG sail winches will be perfect for a 2m boat. I'm only getting away with the smaller setup because my boat is smaller, and the weight and space are more significant issues. I haven't worked out the dagger boards yet.

Hey Simpos1'
I have just sent you the Volvo plans so it will save you some time. I would love to have some one build another big VOR 70 along with mine. If you can scale the decals up to fit a boat that is 1.5 m long would be a big help. The info on the paper would be good to. Could send me the link to the new AC designs as I have not come across them yet.

Surfdabbler,
With the dagger boards I was thinking of having them run on a servo so when you tack you pull one up and drop the other one, and at the same time the keel is canted out to 25 Deg.

I think my email server is blocking the I.P address that comcast is sending. Anyway here is the link for the plans, you may have to wait a week or two to get them.

http://www.velarc.it/index.php?optio...id=2&Itemid=28

Good luck and I hope you build a 2 m long boat. Al so can you please tell me about the new AC12 boats that you were talking bout before.

Did I bit more work on the hull today,
As you can see I have glued in a strip of 9mm balsa along the gunwale of the hull less the 3 mm plus carbon to fit in the deck thinkness. I have cut the strip size down to about 4 just behind the keel box as most of the load should be in front of this point, the 9mm will give the deck more strength when glued in place. I had to add a small bit of balsa at the front to line up with the way to deck kicks up at the bow. the thin balsa strips in the pic's will be taken out when the deck is glued on.

I can't get the photos to load up at this point so I will add them later.

Hey Everybody

The iacc120 site that I linked here before has the new prints from Claudio! My problen
is they are not in autocad format so I can't convert them. I have an email out to Claudio
and hope he can get me the cad format.
Smoofty, Have you made your deck yet? I would like to see it! because all the close pins and wood seems
like alot of work and I would like to compare notes with you. A trick thing I figured out is use
electrical tape when glueing seems with epoxy. The epoxy wont stick and when peeled tape away it leaves a perfect finish and fills gaps nice.
Sent you another email with another account! Se if that works.

Hey Simpros1
I started building the deck the other day, first thing was to cut out the hull shape using the outline of the plug and then dropping it onto the 9 mm balsa strips. After it was sanded and fitted I marked out the cockpit outline using some pic's of the real ETNZ boat. I have moved the start point back at little bit so the keel box can be glued to the under side of the deck.

Now that the balsa has been cut out the next step is to glass both sides with carbon and glue it in place. After the main deck is in place I will start on the rest of the cockpit but not before installing the keel box. Now the pegs or close pins are use to hold the balsa strip in place untill the epoxy had gone off.

Hey Smoofty,

Are you making a wood deck or the plug? Here's a couple of pictures of my deck process
using gel coat and carbon fiber. Other than dry time for epoxys I can build and mount my
deck in about 1hr and about 24 hrs curring.

Hi Simpros,
I all ways make carbon balsa sandwich decks as I need the strength to take the loads that the big A rigs but on the boat, there are no internal ribs and the big RMG sail winch is bolts to the under side of the deck as well. Along with all the deck fittings that place a load on the deck there is the keel box that also fixes to the under side as well.Even with the two layers of carbon the deck is very light but I do like the way you built yours, do you vac bag them as the turns into the cockpit are very clean and straight.

Hey Smoofty

here's a couple of pics of my assembly made of aluminum to hold the servos mast and keel and i use the loc tite hysol
to adhear to the hull. This allows me to take all the stress off the deck! I'm going to use the RMG winch for the AC class hull
that I'm getting ready to build.
Claudio has been very helpfull getting me the cad files for the Alinghi-100 and the new luna Rosa naro hull that I seen in a video
and it was very fast. Note in pics the servo is a side load and I have change it since to top load.

Hey Simpros1,
Did you build the frame your self ? what about the keel box. I have just glassed the new deck for my boat, will put some pics up tonight.

I enlarged the plans for the Volvo 70 out to 2m and man it is going to be Big. I'm still thinking about how to do the canting keel, do I use two large servos or a winch with the block to block system like the German bloke has ??????. There is going to be a hell of a lot of load on it.

Yes I did build the frame! I'm a fabricator designer by trade and I have a fabrication shop and my friend of 30 years has a machine shop and we work on many projects together.
I have not seen the canting keel before this site and WOW this is cool.
I have worked on this type of design before but not with lines and pulleys but we have used gears. What is the weight of the keel on the your volvo? how long is the keel? How many rpm's is the rotation speed? I have a friend that has a couple of heavy duty winch arm gearboxes that
maybe they could be converted for something like this. I have worked with many Dayton
gear ruduction boxes useing 12 volt input but the problem is designing the electronics for the
reciever comunication. Is there any links with pictures of the real canting keel I would love to see it.I will do a little research today and get back here.

John,
I wish I had your set up, my work shop is not that big. Here is a good pic of how the real thing works. and I will try and find the link to the German site that has the pull pull system
this is the link. http://www.stockmaritime.com./modell.../allgemein.php

I have now finished glassing the deck.

Till next time

My canting keel is canting! Yaay! I will try to post a blog update soon, so you can see more details. I still have some more improvements to make, and waterproofing is not done yet, but the mechanics of the servos is done, so I'm happy that it is actually going to work.

Hey Surfdabbler,
Do you know what just the weight of the keel bulb is ?, the displacement of the boat ( Vor70 )is 4.5kg is that the total weight of water that is "displaced" by the hull or just the lead in the bulb. As I need to scale it up to fit the 2m boat.
