Default My own Mini40 "MARK IX" buildlog!

I will build my next Trimaran like the 2M "Foncia" - just a bit smaller.

The hullshapes will basically remain like the "Nightmare Mk.VIII",
but I like the X-shaped crossbars.

Hey Idealist,

Fantastic news, really looking forward to this. I really like the crossmember on Foncia as well and and been thinking about doing mine this way..not just for looks but I thought it also made sense that when the inevitable pitchpole happens then maybe there is more chance of recovery as the front cross members would not be square onto the water when submerged..therefore not so likely to trip up.

Well , Multi's seem to be dominating this sailing website lately..maybe its time for a multi dedicated forum on this site??.

Cheers

Gary

Yeah,
let's do it Ernst. To me it seems us multihullers are all here at RCU, the other boards went dormant again

YESSS! Again they are all WAITING, what will happen next - just as usual -...-

"MARK IX"
The main advantage of the x-beam-system is to mainly concentrate the weight at CG (Center of Gravity),
but to install all rc-equipment between aft beam and traveller -
- allthough the traveller is just there for the looks of it and has no function.

Mast will probably be at 550 from stern - 100mm aftward rake at 2000 mm height - centerboard right behind mastbase.

Aftward beam at 400 mm mainhull (all messured from the stern of course) and 200 mm floats -
- forward beam at 600 mm mainhull and 800 mm float.
This also gives the useful ability to install curved float foils just behind forward beam, as shown in the original "Foncia" drawing.

Both curved beams will be identical/exchangeable.

Looking good already as usual. What kind of glue do you use to glue the foam pieces together?

@bertauy
I normally use doublesided selfadhesive tape, 50 mm wide - the one you use to glue carpet to the floor - but epoxyresin can be used as well.

This time I got several pink foamblocks 125x60x10cm, so only the (wider) mainhullblocks needed glueing.

I also use the doublesided tape for my big pirategaleon, just with 12mm chipboard for the frames in between -
as the frames are spaced 112mm as per plan, this fitted my needs perfectly!

Ernst,

Happy new year. I see that the winter building season is starting up again. The new boat ideas are looking good. I like the idea of incorportaing float foils. I was going to start playing around with that idea myself last season but I ran out of time. I do have an RG65 Tri in my building plans for this year (using Phanchita';s plans) and possibly another mini 40, although with 3 mini 40's now, the basement is getting a little crowded. I'll keep watching your progress closely and maybe I'll cast off another set of hulls from my moulds and go the x crossbeam route with float foils. Good luck with the build.

TBK

A Happy New Year to you as well, TBK!

As for foils on the Mini40 Trimarans -
The problem with this size is, you cannot make them retractable by RC as in a 2M Kingsize Multihull -...- (Oups! - Am I allowed to tell you about our Austrian plans at all?)

Thinking about this whole topic a little further -...- 10 years further maybe -...-

Actually I´m building a NEW Mk.IX and Mk.X at the same time - Mk.X has the same hullcharacteristics as VIII and IX, but 20 % less volume overall -> therefore also less surface overall, hence less overall weight, which should then egalize the added surfaces of FOILS!

Otherwise your boat will be slower than without foils most of the time - 20-25% with equal speed - and maybe only 10 % of overall sailingtime acually FASTER!
Think about that -...-

Hi Ernst,
I already thought something happened to you because you disappeared for several months. Your slim foam cores look cool. Are you going to build it yourself this time?

Happy New Year to all

Hi Sirit,
I didn´t disappear, i just withdrew from the scene for some time
to give you enough space for your business - and you did well!

Yes, I am going to build "Nightmare Mk.IX and Mk.X" myself this time!
My plan is, to have both sailing in spring - April to May 2010 hopefully!

But I´m also building my big pirateship during this winter to ´satisfy´
my alter ego as a Pirate Captn! Muahahaha!

Hi Gary,
Yes, I had - but your own progress inspires me to restart it!

Especially ´cause I will do several thing quite different to your own build.

Well I am really looking forward to seeing you put it all together, very interesting to see other builders concepts . I really do hope we can sail together some day.

cheers...Gary
