Old Boat, New Hobbyist
Hi All,
Irecently came upon an old model that my grandfather had put together many years ago and that had been sitting in his attic for probably 10 to 15 years. It is in need of some major refitting including a new deck, deckhouse, rigging and sails. When he put it together he did not have any of the radio control components so those Iwill need to get after Ifinish refitting her. So with that said, Ido have several questions.
First, if Ican get the pictures uploaded, Iwould love it if someone would be able to recognize the model and let me know what it is. (perhaps this would help with figuring out the rigging and the sail plan) She is 26 and 3/4 inches in lenght with a beam of 6 1/2 inches.
Second, where would be a good place to go to figure out what sails she would need, and of course the rigging? He had plain string for the rigging and no sails.
Third, the hull is plastic. The deck and the deckhouse and other deck components are wood. Iknow that if Isail it (which is my plan), Iwill need to water proof the wood and also the openings where the radio components are accessed. Iwould love some input on that.
Finally, the RCcomponents. Ihave no idea what Iwould need. Ok, Iknow Ineed a radio, reciever, battery and a servo to control the rudder. Any suggestions on these would be appreciated also.
So far the refit is going well. I have built wood model boats, so Iam fairly proficient in the woodworking department, and cannot wait to take it to our local model yacht pond here in San Diego.
Iam hoping that Ican get the pictures uploaded - if not, would love some help there too.
Sorry for so many questions and Ilook forward to hearing from you all.

Hey opena
those pictures help a lot - but sometimes it helps to have someone right there giving help - so - there are at least 2 clubs in your
area , try and google them to see if they have websites and then contact them for info . I am refering to.....
1) San Diego Argonauts
2) San Diego Yacht Club MY Fleet
normally I refer people to the AMYA website for specific club info , but that site is being rebuilt and is not working right now.
when it is fixed it will be www.theamya.org
One note - if you want to keep the bowspirit , thats OK but you will probably still need a club boom for the jib . the "sail servo"
will control both the main boom and the jib club in unison . separate little servo to control the rudder . hope this helps.

Hi there'
good to see you giving new life to an old boat. I think the rigging is supposed to look like this photo. With the bowsprit horizontal. Second photo is just another example.
Keep us posted with your progress. And be warned.... once you start building rc sailboats it can become addictive. I've built over eight now and have two more going

Thanks Allen and Larry for the input. I am going to look up the local club and perhaps take it to one of the meetings. Ihave a feeling that Iwill be building more boats in the future too. My grandfather built a replica rc sailboat of his real sailboat and that has been sitting in the shed for a dozen or more years, it is much larger than this one Iam working on so Ididn't ship it down(it is about 5 or 6 feet long). So that one may be my next project, and eventually Imay actually buy a new model.
Iwill keep the forum updated on the progress and Ican't wait to get her in the water!

RE: Old Boat, New Hobbyist
Well Ihave gotten the easy part done. The desck accessories. Now Ineed to work on the hull interior, the keel and rudder. Ihave been talking to someone from the local club here (Argonauts)and am going to bring the boat with me next Saturday when they sail. Going to also bring the camera and take pics of the boats and their radio gear.

Thanks! Iactually need to stain the deck and reinforce it with some plywood as it is a really thin basswood scribed deck.
