Default USOM Scratch Build

G'day,

Here are some photos of my last USOM build 'Mistral' sailing. Built from the free plans (link below). The 'B' rig sails are made by me as well.

This boat is made from a "Mistral" mold I made. This is Mistral #4 from same mold. Sails like a dream [sm=spinnyeyes.gif].

I'm now also building IOMs. Pic below. Also from a mold. Yes, sails made by Larrykin.

Very nice , I am also building USOM. The Orco 2. I built a Mistral about 3 years ago. It sails very nice. I like your sails , what did you use to make them? Did you use a sail board?

Mike,

glad you like the sails. Below are photos of sail board. How to make and use. These are photos by Claudio from RCUniverse. I built the same sail board but, have found it too small for sails. Should be about 30% wider. I use 50 micron Mylar to make sails. It's taken me about 10 sets of sails to start feeling confident now in sailmaking.

Below is a link to my AU Class build log. Show sails made with larger sail board.

Tried uploading a ZIP file - no go. Only allowed max. 12 pics.

Cheers

Larry L.

I built the same sailboard. I think it is too small for some of my boats, but it works ok. I use ripstop nylon for my sails, because I can't find any Mylar. The ripstop still works very well. Where do you get the plans for your AU class. It looks very nice.

Mike,

plans for the AU Class do not exist. The hull is the old Sydney to Hobart Race maxi-yacht - Nicorette. Took years to develop mold.

Mylar I use Mylar because it's easy to work with and cheap. Here I buy it for $7 /metre. Ripstop costs approx. $29 /m. To find I did a quick Google search of Stationary / Drafting Supply companies in my area. Found largest supplier of drafting equipment and then checked products - tracing film. Company I found called Draftex. But that's here in Oz. I know you can buy Mylar in Yankland. I've read posts in RCGroups who mention suppliers for mail order in States and Canada.

But then again Ripstop is probably that much better for sails.

Here are some pretty pics of my first USOM Mistral sailing. I've built 5.

Larry.

Hello Larry;

I can buy ripstop here for about 6$ per yard 60 inches wide , and in colors. sometimes you can't get the colors you want, but most of the time you can only get white. I don't know what they use it for. Your boats look very nice. I don't have any pictures of my boats because my computer CRASHED !!!!!!! and took all my pictures with it. I do like your au boat.
