Default AC 12 Team NewZealand

This is my first boat build so I have started with the Team NewZealand yacht as my subject as I think it is a great looking boat. I will start posting the build photos in the next couple of days. But first here is the subject as she should be fast and loaded up.

cheers Andrew

Yep, she's a nice looking boat alrighty! I love what you've done with those little people on deck - pretty realistic looking. I'm looking forward to watching your build. I'll race you to the finish. True, I have a headstart, but hey, I've got the keel and daggerboards to sort out, so that's my handicap.

Hey Surfdabbler,
I will give you that one, at least my keel stays in one place. As for the little crew members at least I don't have to pay them much to turn up every weekend.

Now the plan that I'm using is from the "Vela RC" web site and it is the Alinghi plan. As most of the boats look much the same in hull shape it was close enough for me. The first thing is that I enlarged the plan from 1.2m out to 1.5m, as I will be racing this boat as a 10 Rater. After cutting out all the paper hull shapes and gluing them to some 3mm ply it was time to cut and sand, then line them all up and glue them to the base board.

I have also included a couple of pics from this weekends racing and as you can see I already have one Team NewZealand boat on the water.

Hi smoofty37
Have you seen the plans for the NZ boat on rsc by Cloudio d. If not take a look. Might be helpful in some way. Hard to believe that you went sailing this past weekend. We just got two feet of snow yesterday on top of the two feet we have. Something wrong here.
have a nice build . Will be watching.

ok then as I like lots of pic's in other peoples build threads I best put up some more.
Here I have started to plank the hull, as I have never really done much of this any pointers on doing it right would be great.

Here are some more pic's of the hull after it was sanded and checked for humps and bumps and one layer of glass over it. I was going to use it as a plug to pull a mold off then lay up carbon hulls from that. Now I'm thinking of building this as a test hull and If it works well them use it as a plug [sm=72_72.gif].

Ok then today I cut the hull off the building board and it looks like a boat I guess. After I sand back the deck line and give it a coat of spray filler I will start thinking about putting in some rids and the keel box and rudder post. Some more pic's

cheers Andrew

Looking very nice. Seems like you have it all under control. I'm not an expert, but I think unless you are going to build lots of boats the same, the balsa and glass construction is pretty good. The biggest thing I'd do next time is save on weight wherever possible. One layer of tissue cloth on the outside of the balsa is plenty strong enough, and if the resin starts to cure, throw it and mix a new batch. I have some spots on the deck where I tried to quickly finish the job with resin that was starting to gel, and it is just thick resin on the deck, way stronger than necessary, and just adding weight. Anyway, yours is looking nice, and you've been pretty quick about it so far. Are you on holidays?

Hey Surfdabbler,
I have been working on it for a couple of weeks but only got around to posting this week. I,m going to go with the plug idea as I have some carbon fiber cloth laying around that I buid my 10Raters out of so will pull a carbon hull from this one and fit it out for racing. So I guess this will be a double build thread. I'm also thinking about enlarging the Volvo 70 plan out to about 1.7 to 1.8 m ( I can't help myself I like big toys ) so it should have a lot of go in it.

Scrawford,
thanks for the link I will have a good look at it over the next couple of days. Did you say there was a plan for the NZ boat on there ?

cheers Andrew

P.S surfdabbler how is the keel design going ????

I'll be very interested to know the CF hull weight compared to the plug. If the CF hull is significantly lighter, then I'll at least know I'm wrong. If CF is lighter then I might give it a go next time.

My keel is slowing - I'm having radio/servo problems, ([link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1004461]see here[/link]) and I want to find out what the go is before I put too much work into hack-modifying my servos. I'm also short on some supplies - gotta get some more gears and things.

With the carbon hull that I built for my 10 rater that is in one of the first pics, There is no frames at all only the carbon and balsa keel box and rubber servo mount that is also carbon and balsa. the deck is 3 mm balsa with one layer of about 10oz carbon on both sides and is glued together with 12 hour expoy. I did not weigh the hull before fit out but it was as light as.

Now I have sailed that boat in about 12 to 18 knots of wind with the A rig and had some very out of control jibes and nothing has broken yet so the carbon is very good stuff.

Cheers Andrew

Hey guys!!!

I'm working on a hull just like the one here in the forum, So for I have put together 4 boats from the mold. I have tested all type of materails such as Gel coat Carbon fiber kevlar and fiber glass.
I designed the hull as a US one meter class incase I wanted to race it, But I have not been able to test it with another US one meter boat to see how she really goes. Not sure about the rocker hull design on a One Meter it may be to small. My goal is to perfect it and move up to an AC Class
73 inches long with about a 9 foot sail. i used the BMW Oracle theme because I live close to Oracle and there is onf of the real 2003 boats in there pond that I'm able to go onboard and take pictures.

Hey Simpros1,
Nice pic's of the Oracel, If you have other close up pics they would be nice to see, for some detail for my boat. Funny I was going to do a boat up in the Oracle paint job after I finished the team NZ hull.

Scrawford1,
I had a look at that other hull design not to bad but the hull looks a bit fat in the stern when I layed it over the design I'm using now but still it looks scale when its in the water. I guess I'm just comparing it to the long drawn out shape of the 10 Raters that I race.

Not much to report at this point as work is getting in the way but I have cleaned up the deck section as I will be covering it over with balsa to make the plug. Next is to sand it all up and give it some spray filler and sand it back again, then try and pull a hull off it.

till next time.

P.S Simpros More pics please........

I forgot that I'm with the tech guys now...lol and now for the building side of the boat.
First I want to say Smoofty I have all the printing for the Oracale it you need it and I would be glad to give you a set of decals I have already made using the real Oracle boat I have acceess
to. In the new set of pics the hulls are made of all the materials I had statded before and I'm finding the best combination is all CF exept for the deck I use a gel coat reinfoced with kevlar.
The reason for the gel coat is the detail of the deck is to hard to lay up CF!!! The hull in the mold
is the best yet weighing 6.5 onces a far cry from my fist one at 12 onces. I converted from a inside the hull rudder horn to a outside for better performance with the push pull system. The whole boat comes in at about 6.2 lbs for now but I see under 6lbs coming soon. I mold the keel as one and it weighs in at about 3.25 lbs. I think the kool part of my whole assembly is the Mast, Keel and Servos mount all faricated all in one out of aluminum. I will post the assembly of the mast and sail rigging when I take some pics. You guys would like to the link where i get alot of my information http://www.iacc120cup.altervista.org/Main0.html .

Hey Simpros1
I would love to get hold of a set of the Oracle stickers. What size boat do they fit ? and can you make bigger ones. On my ETNZ hull I have just been sanding this week I should have some more pics soon with the finished filler coat on it. I have been looking at that link you sent with the iacc120cup boats, they sure do have alot of them. Would you know if they race them any in other countries.

Ok then,
Had some time to do some more sanding and filling today on the hull. As you can see I gave the boat a quick coat of bule filler and then just chased the bumps with the sanding block. Once I was happy with the hull I then gave it one more coat of filler just to check for any humps or bumps and wouldn't you know it I found a couple, so its back to do a bit more sanding but should not take to much.

Still not sure if I'm going to pull a carbon hull off the plug or go all the way and do a proper mold. Anyway here are some pic's.

well I got some time today to have a go at pulling a carbon hull off the plug as I couldn't wait to see how it would turn out. After refilling and sanding the hulll it was time to give some glassing a go. As you can see in the pic's I cut out a nice bit of carbon to cover the hull with about 1 to 2 inches over hang over the side of the mold. I then just mixed up a big cup full to resin and went to work with my trusty old RSL club ID card and wetted out the cloth.

After the first layer of glass had set I put down a nother layer of 4oz E glass just to cover any gaps in the carbon and there were a couple. Then after about 4 hours she was ready to come out and now I have two boats.

Looking good

I make the mold from the plug looks good using the plug for the mold.
What are you using for a primer on the mold and what mold release? Do you have a close up
pic of the surface? I remember the Oralce art wort you wanted and maybe is best to forward the files to you.

Hey boys,
Ok then the weight of the hull at this point is 395grames and it is 1.5m long, so its 30cm longer than the plan on the website. I will be using a carbon balsa sandwich deck so that should help keep the weight down abit.

simpros1
I will get a photo of the plugs surface for you, I have used a auto product called High build spry putty and it sands very well and with 180 wet and dry paper the finish is just like a very hard paint. As for the mold release I have tryed a new spay on agent call "PTFE release agent dry lubricant" you just spry it on clear and it looks like there is not much going on but it works well. As I had never tried this stuff before also gave the plug a quick all over rubb with some car wax polish.

After seeing how well the inside of the hull came up I still thinking about using it as a mold only because I'm sick of sanding glass and you do get a better finish doing it the other way.

Till next time

Hey surfdabbler'
I printed off the plans the other day for the Volvo 70 and I think as they are the hull is about 1.2m long is that what you had before you scaled it down ?. My proplem is I would love to scale it up to 2m and have a very powerfull yacht, My not be able to race against anyone but she would go like a cat on a hot tin roof. I would like to know how long your boat is.

cheers Andrew

Hi Smoofty. My boat is much smaller. I actually scaled down the plans from 1:17.5 to 1:25. Before I found the plans I had already calculated 1:25 as the scale I wanted, and not wanting to go bigger. So anyway, my hull is 85cm long. 2m would make a HUGE boat. Would sure be nice to see it run though.

I have been making some slow progress, so I'll update my build log again soon. I gotta stay ahead of you.
