Looking for anyone working with a Robbe Valdivia Schooner. I did 11 months with it and put info in a build diary at my website with tons of pictures. So far, I've only seen mine and one other in a UK Marine model magazine. It's a beautiful boat! Can't imagine no one else has made one.

Hi gicosakro,
I used ZAP CA Thick (15 - 20 second type) for most all the glueing. It might be called ZAP Gel now, not sure if it changed recently. It gives me time to aligne the parts before it sets.

For the joining of the deck to the hull, I used 10 minute Plastic epoxy. I was not 100% satisfied with that and would probably use something different next time.

Yes I think CA is good but in some parts I need more time for aligne the pieces like in the image nr 7 from instruction manual.And to give more compact to the pieces.I have a friend who works with fiberglass and he advise me to use a resin like gelcoat that atack the surface of the ABS and is dry in almost 45 minutes.How many kg did you use on the hull?

How much is the clearance between the end of the prop and the leading edge of the rudder? Looks like it might be a little tight if you have already glued the prop shaft in place.

I've just started a build series on the Valdivia in the July issue of [link=http://www.seaways.com]"Ships in Scale"[/link] magazine.
NOTE!!!! Joining the deck to hull is critical!!! The recommended Stabilit-Express glue is expensive, but works and can be had from hobby-lobby.com . I tried 30 minute epoxy... was surprised when the deck peeled right off! Didn't try slow CA, might be a good choice, but CA seems brittle to me.
I fell back on my favorite stuff for strong joints on difficult plastics- PL Premium polyurethane construction adhesive, only available in caulking tubes from Home Depot, afaik. Like S-E, it WILL peel off ABS if worked hard enough, but it's really agressive and slightly flexible. I've had no issues with the build. But note that it won't cure if it can't breathe, like between two sheets of plastic. A narrow bead will do the trick on Valdivia's flanged deck joint.

I have posts here and over at RC Groups. There are several others building ships there, but they are going to be ravaged by the likes of me once they dare find the courage to ply the open sea. They may as well stay in port and drink rum and chase the ladies as I will sail circles around them.........arrrrrrrrrrr.....

Has anyone built one of the schooner kits that were designed for static displayed and converted it to rc? I have been thinking of trying this. I understand the keel and rudder would have to be extended and ballast added. What do you think of free turning sails and backup motor? Thanks!

fourth time.
The Valdivia is some thing I've wanted since I first saw it,Have to keep saving my mad money
it's about $1850.00 Cdn for the complete kit.
Btw had your site bookmarked for some time and really enjoyed your build.

I would love a Valdivia, but pennies would not stretch that far this year and my skills not so good.

I am building a Mary J Ward now. How much 'harder (difficult) is the Valdivia.

I too am building the MJW schooner, also with many mods.

Yesterday I found what I hope is my next sailboat build: The new Vanadis Schooner from Billings!

I want one!

62" overall, nearly 12" beam. New release for 2007. May have to order from Europe but I always save money when I do. Don't know the price yet.

I have a Billing Bluenose II kit. I think it is too small to R/C effectively. However am using patterns and resizing to double size which should be quite stable.

Not sure how to have jibs rigged to R/C use, any suggestions?

I have this hull all planked and I have put a few coats of epoxy on it and almost ready to paint it. I stained the masts and spars today and clear coated them. I have all of the deck fittings and deck "houses" made and finished . I need to install them and mount the masts and spars. So I figure I am about 1/2 through this project. Rigging should take a lot of time and effort I know. I will post a photo when I get it all together and start on the rigging.

Finished the schooner (need to get it wet yet) and started on a modern type model sailboat. Again making it from plans only.

Go to the Robbe wesite and go to the Valdivia page. You can downolad a full set of instructions. German and English, but English versio is at the back. Lots of diagrams and shows how V is rigged.

Lots of ideas are transferable.
There is a Guy called JayDee who did a 2m version of bluenose. He has a site. Cannot access at moment.
If you can't find I will search. He is also on the Model Boat Mayhem website and posts on their forum

Has anyone converted the Sterling schooner kits America and Emma C. Beery? I think there was an article done in Model Ship Builder on a conversion of America in the early eighties and would like to find a copy.
