Sailboat help needed
 

I built a sailboat from a kit 10 years ago. Don't know the name or make. Maybe someone can help with this. Hull is 45 inches long and the mask is 63 inches from deck up. What size radio and servos do I need? Including pic for identification help. I have a smaller sailboat so I have an idea of the servo setup somewhat. Thanks Ron

It is a Dumas star 45 and I built it many years ago. I found some of my notes. I also have 3 other sailboats that are not built some smaller and some bigger. One is 34" a 52" and a 64" all aprox. See Pics. Now I really don't have any thoughts as to servos and a radio to buy. The 7990 servo suggestiom for the arm servo is good but what else is needed.I know the local hobby shop can't help. I have two 2 channel radios one channel 66 and one 88. both are used in smaller kit boats. Maybe I can use one of these radios for this boat also to save some money??? I also have two HITEC HS-325HB SERVOS HERE. Can these be used? Thanks Ron

Your completed boat is a Star 45, a sanctioned AMYA one design class. http://theamya.org/boats/star45/. The 2nd may be a Marblehead except that I can't see much of it on the shelf. http://theamya.org/boats/marblehead/. The 3rd I don't know. The last one is an East Coast 12 Meter. http://theamya.org/boats/ec12/ Check the manufacturers label of the EC12 and let me know what it is. The EC 12 has an extensive builders forum at http://www.ec12.org/. You can see all of the sanctioned classes on the AMYA web site. There is plenty of information on these web links to help you decide what you need.

Thanks for your help! I found some of my info and have the radio plan for this boat. It calls for a 2 channel radio and what is called a Dumas Probar SCU for the sail control rod. I'm in the process of finding out what I can use to get it radio equipped. Dumas says to buy a Sail control servo as they don't make the Probar SCU anymore. Here is a pic of what the control section should look like as per original plan.

I just found the Dumus Probar I bought back in the day for tghis boat. I also found manuals for all the boats. Pics Included. Here are some pics. Hope to get the Star 45 on the water soon! To use the Probar or a big servo with arm is the question!

There's some discussion on the Bingo here. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1592741. It can be registered in the AMYA Marblehead class. It won't be as competitive as the current designs but you can have fun with similar vintage boats. Since your Dumas 12 meter has not been built, is cannot be grandfathered into the EC12 Meter class. There was a rule re-write in 1995 with a grace period to get boats registered. You can build it according to the current rule if you like but it cannot be registered. However, the EC12 hull can be made into a nice schooner.

Thanks for your help. I only sale locally for fun no competition. Trying to get some of my older boats built and run but not sure what to use if I don't have the dumas probar to control the sail. Maybe someone will give me some advice. Thanks Ron

The best overall producer of servos of any kind is HiTec. They have servos with bar and rotary types as well. Try their website.

Off Topic but I have to tell you that seeing your rc boat on shelves with pots and pans really amused me a lot. I'm simple though. :)

There are a number of fine producers of Servos of which, Hitech is certainly one. Here is a link to a very good servo data base that is a great resource for selecting servos http://www.servodatabase.com/

Once specifications are known you can compare brands to see which ones might be the best fit for you. Hitech is certainly a major brand and has some good products, but "best" is a relative term. My favorite sail servos are made by Futaba but that is not to say I don't have any Hitech's or other brands. Heck, Hobby King has some good servos at very reasonable prices.

I'll bet the Class secretary could make some suggestions as to the correct servos' for the boat.

Looks like the servo tray will accomodate a full size sail servo and rudder servos are not very big so you should have no big issues installing your servos. My quess is servo arm type should do the job but the plans should detail all that for you.

Looks like a fun project for you.

The only boat I have left to build is the bingo that hasn't been built. The Equation, Star 45, and Heritage has been completed. Don't know if I'll ever sail them as they are a bit big for the pool. Ron
