3D Printers

Here in Chile in few days will arrive a new 3D printer that work with ABS plastic. Those printers woks within 0.1 mm precision, more than any wood modeler can build, and many r/c boats are made with ABS plastic.

Anyone from the very developed Europa or USA have experience with hulls made in those printers?

I'm designing two hulls, a very narrow canoe for light winds and a scow for strong winds and have the idea to "print" those design more than build them in the traditional way.

RE: 3D Printers

HI:
By printer you mean air vaccum?? or hot press moulding??

If so, ask to Rolf Koster before, he had a lot of experience gluing the parts of ABS ULYs produced in Argentina. Is very easy to mass produce the pieces, but...
Very complicated and time consuming. Hard to get strong enougfht bonds.
nedd a very specific glue called TOLUOL.

Tato, look for "Impresion en 3D" on Google, is amazing! In a short time you will print in 3D a stainless steel! The concept is a "Digital manufacturing"

How big is your 3d printer?
Can it do a 39 in/ 1m hull?

I have seen 3d printers in action but they are small @ 8-1/2 x 11 (X,Y)

Perhaps you can give us a demo when you get your 3D printer.

tnx

RE: 3D Printers

tirador,

It is not my printer, a Chilean company is importing because they work in the market for 3D models. The printer is small, something like 10" x 10" x 10", but they print the hull parts and then welded parts. The promise is that I can never find the welds because they are perfect.

They promised me that they can do parts any size, including a IOM hull, but the problem is that an ABS IOM is not legal. The rules say that thermoplastic are allowed only if they are in a list of allowed materials, but they never did the list, then any thermoplastic is not allowed by now.
