1/3rd scale WW1 wheels
News!!! I ordered mine!! below is note to Sir Percy
Hello Steve, We here at Williams Brothers are trying to help Dan out and keep the company up and running. As part of this push, we are introducing a pre-buy of a 1/3 scale vintage wheel. Our goal is to sell 60 pairs, at the special pre-buy price of $69.95 by Dec. 31, 2010. This will help fund the cost of the new mold and production. Our estimated ship date will be by the end of Feb 2011, if we are able to get the initial 60 pairs sold. Would you help by passing along the word for us? A flyer will soon be ready for distribution as well.
Thank you for your support,
Lisa

RE: 1/3rd scale WW1 wheels
Daniel told me the dimensions but I didn't write all of them down. The overall OD is 9.25" In addition, he stated that the wheels will be offered with two outer faces, one appropriate to German and French and one appropriate to British. I didn't write anything down because I had several of my drawings open in AutoCAD and everything he said matched my drawings which are based on Wind Sock Data Files. Buy away!! If this is a success, he said more 1/3rd scale stuff will be coming.

Thanks for posting Dave. I have a pair of each on order. Lisa said the technical info will be coming soon. As soon as I get it, I will post. But, I've known Dan Brett for over 30 years and know these will be great. Way to go on the 1/3 scale accessories.

As we have discussed elsewhere, 700mm diameter wheels were common on many WWI aircraft. That would be 27.5 inches so 9.25" would be just about perfect. Apparently, the DVII did use a larger wheels size. But the 9.25" seems like a good overall choice. My hope would be that these new wheels get the "tire-to-hub" ratio about right. On the smaller WB wheels the tires are too wide. But the larger sized wheels look about right. Those larger wheels we often see on the European Dawn Patrol models don't look right to me. The tire is actually too thin.
It's great to hear that WB is planning to produce these with two hub variants.
I'd pre-order a pair immediately, but I can't at this point imagine myself getting into 1/3 scale.

Thanks Don, I am aware that there was no "carbon black" used at the time. I knew that WB makes 1/4 scale "white" tires/wheels and that is what I really was referring to when I said "grey". Can someone post the William bros. web address here? I do have an e-mail address for Daniel and have asked him how I can order a pair of the wheels. Cheers.

John, he sez they will be in both white and black. He is also looking at making differant tire sizes available on the same rim. To his credit, he very openly acknowledged that the 1/4 wheels are to small. That is on his someday to do list to correct.

RE: 1/3rd scale WW1 wheels
Well, I just got an e-mail from Lisa and she says initially she thinks they will just be black. I also asked about the size of the tire cross section. She did say there will be both German and allied wheels and they are still looking for suggestions for the prototypes. I always thought the 1/4 scale wheels were too skinny and not quit big enough in diameter. Nice to know Dan wants to get it right for all of us. I hope he does do the white ones. They can always be made black or what ever color. It's a lot easier to start out with a white tire and more scale also. Thanks for posting the web site Teus.

They might want to review my "review" of the WB vs. Flair wheels on this thread:

Also does anyone have easily at hand diagrams of the German/French Continental tires and the Palmer AeroCord Tyres? I know I have the Palmer drawings somewhere on my hard drive. At the moment I can only find a paper printout of an article in World War I Aeroplane (October/November 1994). Drawings of the tyre cross sections also appeared in Cross and Cockade.
I don't believe I've seen a drawing of the Continental tyre.

Some good stuff here on Continental tyres. I would definitely recommend that the tyres be available in WHITE.

RE: 1/3rd scale WW1 wheels
Here are the pdf's I was looking for. This gives just about all the information needed for making a really good scale wheel. If they are only going to make ONE basic wheel. I would recommend that they base the prototype on the German/French Continental style rim/hub. It wouldn't be too hard to modify the Continental wheel to the British Palmer style, but modifying the Palmer into a Continental would be almost impossible. Both the Continental and the Palmer came in the 700mm size so one size could fit all.

RE: 1/3rd scale WW1 wheels
That's the problem with talking about "1/6" scale wheels or "1/4" scale wheels. Different aircraft used different sized wheels so "one scale" doesn't fit all. The DVII used larger wheels than most of the earlier German, French, or British aircraft. So it's not that the WB "1/4 scale" wheels are "too small," it's just that the DVII's wheels were "too big."

Del,
Good, thanks. I ordered a pair of each. Dudes need to quit worrying about things and just order a pair.
Steve
ps. The German pair is for the 1/3 scale D-VII, you'll get you turn at the sticks this season. (finally right) All framing is complete, I'm rough sanding and fitting everything. Haven't decided on a color scheme yet, trying to find something not over done without lozenge.

I'll start limbering up the ole thumbs.
Lisa told me if these go well, they would like to do more 1/3 scale stuff.
