1/5 Waco
Good afternoon all, I've bought a 1/5 scale waco kit and was wondering if a saito FA100 would be a suitable engine for it? I would like to know what engine you guys have in the same plane Thank-you very much!!

RE: 1/5 Waco
I have flown the Pica 1/5 scale Waco with a .91 four stroke (built very light) and it was adequate but just barely. The 100 would be better of course but not a great deal better. In my opinion it will be fine if you keep the airplane light and are looking for scale type performance or just slightly better. My .02 cents of course.

Thank-you, on the box it says the plane should weight 12 to 13 pounds, and I forgot to point out that the engine is the saito fa 100 twin. I dont know if it makes a diffrence, if its too small I'll get a bigger saito twin. I want to go four strokes on this one.

Down in the Vintage and Golden Era section here on RCU, you will find the very large thread on the Pica Waco. You'll find the folks there most helpful. People with much experience on this particular plane prefer the OS 160 twin or similar engine. Good luck on the build.

The twin has less power than a single. Adding a cylinder adds that much more internal drag without a change in cubic inches. You dont see 300 cubic inch single cylinder car engines because you would have a 200lb piston moving up and down and that would be hard to engineer. The smaller 1/6 scale Waco is better for the engine you have; A 120 size single or one of the middle size twins One of the older Saito 130 or last OS 120 Gemini II twin would be the smallest. OS 160 or Saito 182 but they would have a bunch of power.

I don't know how big is your Waco, but I can cross-reference you to the 1/4 scale Stampe, if that helps.
This model is 82" span and weighs in at about 15lbs, wet.
Now, my pal has one that he flies on an older Saito 1.20 ... very modest performance.
Whereas mine has a Saito 1.80 and is a delight ... great big, open manoeuvres. Lovely. Prior to the Saito, it had a 1.20 Yamada, which offered similar power to the Saito 1.80.

i am flying my 3rd waco, first one was with a .90 2 stroke, very modest performance and built light 10 lbs. second with a 1.08 at 12 lbs good performance. current one is a overweight pig 16 lbs first flew with a 1.20 2 stoke good performance, currently flying with a 1.80 saito 4 stroke.
this plane has a lot of drag. if you can keep it around 10 lbs it should fly it but it will be one that will take a while to climb. best bet is find a good 1.50 4 stroke

Your right, come to think of it. At least he won't need to fly at full throttle all the time with a 1.50. I just bought the Black Knight 1.50 Saito 4 stroke last summer and I haven't even broke in the engine yet. That's one [8D] looking engine.

Ah, well.
I'm flying a 72" biplane, too. It's a DB Bi=stormer. Similar weight.
It has an OS .90 four-stroke and flies very well, for the vintage-type ... but would need a 1.20 in order to be lively.

Well what do you guys think of the Saito FA182 twin for this plane??

The 182 would power the 1/5 WACO well, and sound awesome ! I don't know if it will fit inside the cowl, however.
I've seen a few of these WACO's fly. To me, a 1.20 four stroke is perfect. For a little stronger performance, a G-23/G-26 will do the job.
