Help Needed : Identifying my 1/4 Scale Cub please
Hello Everyone
I recently acquired a VERY old 1/4 scale Cub ( at least 25 years old), I added a DLE 20, new windscreen and have since flown it numerous times...its a lovely flyer. I want to upgrade some other bits gradually and tidy up some other areas such as the cockpit.
One item I am considering is a Robart functional landing gear and new cowl. On the Robart web site they specify a fueselage width of 6 1/2", measuring mine it is 7 1/2"...this also brings up the queston of which after market cowl I buy as I belive there are some subtle differences. The gent I bought the plane from 'thinks' it is a SIG Cub.
So my questions are 1) is there some way of identifying which Cub this is ie Sig, Balsa USA, Great Planes etc ( I am told fueselage width is an indicator) and 2) where can I purchase a nice after market cowl ( preferbaly with the engine details).
Thanks very much - Dino

The BUSA cub is 7-1/2" wide where the landing gear mounts. Robart makes a wide version of the gear for this cub.... It is the very best purchase you can make for your cub!! Fibreglass cowls are available...The one I have was made by Stephen J Weber (or Aeroglass) and is the best fibreglass layup I have ever seen - it is almost a shame to paint it. I'm pretty sure that places like Fiberglass Specialties would have something as well.....

Wayne, Does Aeroglass have a website? I have several of his cowls, and your right, they are the cleanest best looking quailty cowls I have ever bought. I have been trying to find him for a couple of years now? Who do you purchase yours from? I know he is in Canada.
Thanks

The Balsa USA 1/4 Cub I had came with a wing that mounts to the side of the top of the fuse. I believe my Sig 1/4 had a top mount single piece wing. Both great fliers and the Robart gear was very nice also. TNT make fiberglass cowls.

Good luck getting the robart cub gear (690 or 690B), I have had mine on order since october and every couple of weeks Robart tell me they are shipping them to distributors, so far, they just keep pushing the date out. hoping to get them sometime this month but losing faith with them at the moment.
as per above, there are two sizes, you will know which to go for by the width of the Fuselage, the 690 is the smaller one, the 690B is the wider one.
I have the 690B on a plane and can tel, you that they work and look great.

That is very typical of Robart....they offer a wide variety of decent products, but cannot keep stock in everything at all times....(seems closer to seldom....) I waited 5 months for mine, but in the end, it was well worth it....

Thanks for all the help gents, after some replies from the 'other' forum, combined with the replies here, and some cross checking, I am now very confident its a Balsa USA kit...I will be ordering the Robart undercarriage later tonight and will wait to see if there is any more info on Aeroglass before I order a cowl.... if not then I will buy a new cowl from FibreGlass Specialties...thanks very much fellas, much appreciated. - Dino
