RE: Hall Springfield Bulldog build
I think Wilson is doing a great job! Just keep telling him it's the Hall Racer and not the 'Bulldog'![sm=teeth_smile.gif] Ed Packard of Cleveland Models acquired the cowling and other parts of the origional when it was dismantled. These parts were then 'donated' for scrap for WWII. An interesting thing about elliptical wings with symmmetrical airfoils is that the wash-in comes 'natural' or is 'induced' for this particular layout without having to 'twist' the wing. Vern Clements related this to me via phone conversation many years ago. He had discussed his plans with Bob Hall. Vern kindly included one of my ideas for building in one of his later catalogs. He was very passionate about his plans.

RE: Hall Springfield Bulldog build
Very little can happen in my shop without Wilson's help Arup. He actually likes dogs as long as they don't mind him. I kind of think he believes he is a dog at times. He's not very "cat" acting.
Anyway, I'm plugging along. Left wing panel and aileron is basically complete. I still have to add some hinge blocks, servo mount and provide for a method of attaching the wing to the fuselage rib. I'm not sure I'm going with the method on the plans yet. So here's the mostly completed first panel.

phil,
Interesting, Ithought my cat was the only one who liked to lay on a set of plans rolled out on the floor. Tom, our cat, sprawls out on any set of plans Iroll out. If the plans are large he does help hold them down while Ihave a look.

Semeraro, Wilson helps me do everything. He loves to lay on plans too. He's quite a builder, walking around my bench and what ever he can do to "help".

I've been following your progress. Nice work.
I have a helper in my shop, too. She specially likes to inspect plans, when I lay them on the floor !
Here's a pic of Talle, inspecting the newly covered wings on my 1/3 Spacewalker.

It dumped almost 18" of snow on us this week. Not much to do but work on airplanes.
The right wing panel is coming along. Here's a couple pics of recent progress.

Since this is kind of a "lesser" known plane I thought I'd include a couple pics of the actual aircraft for those who don't know where this is heading. You can also check out the cool photo of Donny's model above.

We have wings! Here's a few pics of the completed wings, or nearly completed. I still have to shape the ailerons leading edges and put in some hinge blocks, servo mounts and figure out how I'm going to attach them to the fuse. Basically done though. The aileron construction is typical of the tail feathers so I'll show more detail on that when I get those done.

With the wings finished up, I'm moving on to the tail feathers. Here is the glue up of the horizontal stab & elevator cores as well as the stab spar. Wilson is, of course, here helping.
That's my Great Plane's Stinson and Flair DR-I you can see in the background behind Wilson.

The tail feathers are sheeted so I've also glued up the pieces for this. Here's the rough parts and the pattern for comparison.

Here the stab core has been cut to shape and I'm adding the spar which is glued centered along the trailing edge. Since the spar extends over the surface of the core, I had to build it up hanging over the edge of the bench. Here I'm glueing up the spar.
The other stick pictured is a spar doubler that extends partial span.

Here is the first side of the sheeting being added to the stab. Note the stab is supported up off the table on some scraps of shelving to assure it remains flat while the weight is applied. Clothes pins secure the leading edge.

Getting going on the elevators too. They are built up similar to the stab except there is no outer sheeting. A 3/32 core is used with a balsa leading edge. Ribs are cut from 3/16 sheet.

Both sides of the stab have been sheeted here and the elevators are finished except for the tip blocks. After sheeting a laminated bass wood leading edge is added to the stab in 2 layers. Here the first lamination is added.

RE: Hall Springfield Bulldog build
Moving on to the vertical stab. This is built up the same as the rest of the tail feathers. A 3/32 sheet core with ribs glued on and sheeted with 1/16 balsa. The spar/hinge post is bass. All ribs are cut from hard 3/16 balsa sheet.
First thing we need is the sheet stock glued up to make big enough pieces to cut the parts from. Here is the core and sheeting glue up.

RE: Hall Springfield Bulldog build
After trimming the core sheet to shape and carefully glueing the spar, centered, to the trailing edge, the ribs are added. While it isn't clear in these photos, the spar tapers from root to tip. Also since it again overhangs the surface of the core, it must be built hanging over the edge of the bench.
