Large turnbuckles
I am trying to decide on turnbuckles for the 31.25% Aviatik DI I'm building. There seem to be several options. I have pictures and drawings of several period turnbuckles and have concluded that there is a LOT of variation.
The Jim Kiger drawings of the Thomas Morse S4C has 3 types, all with a 2" long barrel. It is the diameter of the barrel and the threads that vary according to the load.
The Kiger drawings of the Nieuport 27 don't have a detail of the main turnbuckles, but the GA drawings suggest a 4" barrel for the lift and landing wires.

I like the availability of a clevis end with the Proctors, but the 1-64 thread, even with the available stainless ends seems a little small. The Dubros are a little small, (but I would tend to err to the smaller rather than larger), but pretty crude. The ones I have have pretty loose threads. The big Kavans are very well made, have a lot more range available, look great but are a little large and have just the eye ends.
(Then there are other alternatives like 4-40 Kwik-Links and Dubro strut ends.)
So what do other people use? And why did you choose that brand/method?

DuBro also have a threaded rod end #302 that is esentially a clevis end that works great with the 1/4 scale turnbuckle on the right hand thread end. I used lots of then on my 1/3 scale N 28 c1/ I like them for the steel 4-40 threads instead of the 1-64 in brass. Another thing is the size of the eyebolt on the Du Bro is big enough to drill out and use a ferrule for the eye in the cable.

Ditto what geezeraviation said, I (& several others I fly with) use the dubro turnbuckles with the threaded rod end as a clevis. They work great & I add threadlocker and safety wire for extra security. The safety wire is a nice scale detail anyway.

Here's a shot of the forward port side anchor for the flying wires on the big guy. You gotta safety wire them or they come apart, not pretty when theyre functional. They're hard to see the "clevis" threaded rod end as they're sort of inboard on the 28.

Thanks, Doc. That is what I am leaning towards, tho' I wish the Dubro turnbuckle was of better quality - it is a very "loose" thread. I am assuming you suggest using these:

Martin you are correct, A little blue locktite goes a long way towards snugging up those threads, wait till final assembly though. Art makes a good point on the brackets Du Bro sell that work in many situations, I made my anchor points out of one piece of stainless steel drilled for the two clevises, it is mounted to a maple cross piece tying it to the one on the other side. You should work toward always tying the opposet sides together to prevent stressing the fuselage structure.
