THE DAWN PATROLS OF 2011

Just back from the Blue Max event down at Fantasy of Flight, and a question that was raised was "where was the next Dawn Patrol Event"? And after getting a similar query via e-mail, I went ahead and completed a little project I've been working on this year.

* Bold Denotes a Dawn Patrol Event

For our purposes, I've defined Dawn Patrol Events as an R/C Fly-In featuring scale models of airplanes from the 1903 to pre WW2 era, specifically featuring the warbirds of the First World War. These I’ve marked with an astericks (*) and in Bold.

The other events listed are shown on one of the major WW1 modeling sponsors website (ie, Glenn Torrance, Balsa USA, etc) - if it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for me!

Take this as a first pass at this list - I think I've managed to confirm all website addresses for these events as shown, and verified the dates, but if attending an event everyone should do their homework!

Let me know which events I've missed, and we'll get the list updated.

Best regards,

Lee McDuffee

I'm sure we'll be hearing from our friends out on the left coast, as I'm sure there will be several Dawn Patrol events well to the west of the Mississippi!! It just takes longer for the Dawn out there, that's all!!!

also, on July 31, 2011. The Indianapolis RC Modelers hold their community airshow. It includes a WW1 section. I always try and get as many WW1 flyers from the area as possible to put on a good showing. Not a dedicated DP, but normally a good show.

The Oregon Dawn Patrol and Classic Air Races is in Umpqua, OR this year, at a winery no less. My wife is showing more interest in attending than usual due to the new venue!

There are at least two on the list west of the big river. I'm CDing the Bomber Field gathering and plan to attend The Tri City Patrol at Kingsbury in June. Good idea Lee, good to post these in thier own category. Wish I could do a couple east of that river but fuel costs make it hard on a fixed income.

Darn you Lee! Had to go and pique my interest in attending far away events again! [>:]

Sheesh, with 4.15 per gallon gas prices I am not sure I can attend many events this year. My wife has already informed me that we have a family event at the beginning of September [:@] so it looks like HDP is out of the picture this year (first one that I have missed since it has been at the AMA site), and it looks like July might be fubar'd too I thought my options were limited, but it looks like there are many to choose from
