RE: *** Top Gun 2011, RCU Onsite Coverage ***
Ok guys, I know you are all probably going to hate hearing this as much as I hate saying it...... But......... that's going to about wrap it up for now with my onsite coverage of Top Gun 2011. However, that doesn't mean that I'm even close to finished. This was just my onsite coverage. When I get home tomorrow the REAL WORK begins as I will start working on the full coverage of the event. I will have a video, in flight pictures, and static stills of all the planes that competed in Top Gun 2011 (minus a few that I missed to do crashes and such). I will also bring you lots more of the sights of Top Gun 2011. That will be coming in a few weeks here on RCU. I'll make an announcement when that goes up and is live.
I hope you all enjoyed the content that I have tried to provide here during the event. I enjoyed meeting so many of the hobby's greatest modelers at the event and hope to see more next year.

RE: *** Top Gun 2011, RCU Onsite Coverage ***
I would like to tell all thercu subscribersmy top gun storey.6months ago I saw Frank Tiano at the Baycityfliers warbird fly.I asked him ifI would be able to recive an entry to top gun 2011 as I had entered and finished several local scale comps and imac pattern before he said send me an emailI did and several weeks later recived my official entry forms . skip to the contest day 1 . my first flight outI had severe motor issues the timing on my g62 moved and damage to the hub and shaft chuch key endend my day with a bang and shtterd prop so without ever even taxiing out top gun was over for me .I asked Frank whatI should do as this was my only plane he gave me two options compete without scoring with another plane my 1\3 scale extra 230 or get this ..... HE SAYS WHAT IF I LONE YOU A MOTOR 2 MIN LATER I HAD IN MY HANDS A BRAND NEW BRISSON 55 AND I LOAD UP AND OFF WE GO FOR A LONG NIGHT ....WHO SAYS FRANK TIANO ISNT A GREAT GUY COME SEE ME .. This man doesnt know me and trust me whenI say it wasent a cheap motor! I drive to my home 75 miles away from lakeland and start a nascar style taredown!I find the shaft key has ate the track it rides in due to a loose nut with powder of alum dust everywhere ... As the brisson would have ment a total chang in choke cowl throttle and fuel lines it wasent going to be easy. soI started cleanin up the damaged parts a few hours and some dremal drill work later and was driving back with the old 62 running like a champ! back at tg day 2I completed my first flight in a 25 guesting crosswind with an 85.5 not to bad but I was so nervous about the motor working my hands shaking like crazeyI had to calm down.... Day 3 I put in a respectable score 91.25 same crosswind but thats more like it! day 4I had off but as I was calling for Carlos Rangel in masters class 2 flights a dayitwas crazy so didI make the 40% cut for sunday????YES!I was so happy back in the zone shaky hands gone and owning my sky sunday! called for Carlos 2 flights and bam winds back and hard core gusts after his last flight my flight comes upI tell you it was a blast 5 airplanes in the air in an formation around the linder bomber field was so coolI put in my best flight yet andIknew it! I had to go around a couple of times for my turn to land so I thew in a nice fly by and and big victory roll that flight score 96.25.......I finished 9thIn the top ten first time out with a 3rd scale flybaby bipe what a feeling ....What doI have to say about top gun anybody who has flown in a few local scale meets and is safe pilot and up to the challenge should try it Frank Tianos events are great and the dinner was a entertaning blast with a big screen playing our aircraft in the backround .....If Frank didnt lone me that motorI would never had tried to fix my 62 To A great promoter and director Thank youFrankfor the kick in the rearcant wait till next year! RE: *** Top Gun 2011, RCU Onsite Coverage ***
Glad to hear it worked out so well for you. It seems there were many of us first time contestants that had to overcome obstacles. The pressure of first time flying at an event like this already has the blood pressure peaking, but such issues could give one a seizure. The fact that the event was run so well did a lot to help calm the nerves. We didnt know if we would be able to make out second day because of a couple problems, we left the field the first flying day with our plane on the crash cart but it all worked out in the end and I wouldnt trade the experience for anything. This is the kind of thing that is a lifetime experience and can do a lot to make one posess a wealthy soul full of fond memories.

Gentlemen. I did not know my statement about Mr. Scale would mean so much. Actually I do call Three people that name DAVE PLATT,HARRIS LEE and FRANK TIANO there are others I know such as the AMA But these three are responsible for the beginning of of organized scale in this country. I know all three of these people and their backgrounds. Dave for bringing his talents to this country. Then Harris for his consept of the Scale Masters and finally Frank for his idea of Top Gun. Which brings up the subject of History. I hope someone starts something soon before we lose this info. By the way have you noticed the over 15000 hits in about 10 hours. Just thought I would throw this in. Now back to more photos.places etc. Mel

RE: *** Top Gun 2011, RCU Onsite Coverage ***
Thank You Ken and all other workers, photographers and helpers that made Top Gun another successful adventure! This was my second time at Top Gun and I have to admit it is becoming the one event that I look forward to the most. Great Pilots, friends, planes and spectators all in one place. I know the public gets to see a little behind the scenes but I dont think they understand the great fraternity of scale pilots and the friendship and admiration we have for each other. I recieved a tremendous amount of help from Rob Lynch and Peter Goldsmith who I know had other things to do but took time out to help us. It will never be forgotten. I hope I will someday be able to help them or anyone that needs it. Cant wait to Have a great time at Top Gun 2012. Might have to bring the B-2 again!

I'd also like to add my thanks Ken for all your hard work in keeping those that couldn't attend up to date. I enjoyed getting your reports each morning here across the pond. I particularly enjoyed your excellent photography. Had a bit of fun - hope you don't mind.

Love the name, love the concept. Will it be a competition, or more like the Monster Planes event?

Thats all we know for now. Frank didn't give out any more info.
My suggestion would be for anybody reading this and would like to go to a event like this to Email Frank directly and let him know. The more emails he gets the more likely he would promote it.
