One of my favorite events to cover every year has got to be Top Gun. I love being here to see some of the best in scale aircraft around. And 2011 is definitely not a disappointment. There is a great mix of scale aircraft that have been here before as well as new aircraft being seen at Top Gun for the first time. The first day is done and it's already been a great event. The weather was a bit warm today (ok, it was HOT!!!) with temps in the 90's and high humidity. In addition the winds were up a bit today blowing in as a cross wind most of the day. But for the most part the pilots had little trouble dealing with the crosswind.

Today's flights consisted of the two Pro-Am classes (Pro-Am Pro and Pro-Am Sport). There was definitely some great looking planes and some great flying as well.

I don't know how anyone could judge the flights under those conditions, every clip looked dreadfull.People have talked about the TG wind for years. Wouldn't it be wise to move the event to a more calmer time of year?

But it sure highlights some exceptional piloting skills. Some special Badge of Insane Bravery should be awarded to the pilot of that DrI.

I know that there is a list of pilot, but no list of what planes go with what pilot. Can anyone post a list?

Pictures of each pilot and there aircraft would be even better.

Thanks for the thread and the pictures, just what I have been looking for. I am in the shop working and I can hear the wind howling outside, I am just 40 minutes from Lakeland. The guys have their hands full with the wind, great jub flying in it. I will get some pictures tomorrow and post them.

When it's that windy, are points deducted if a pilot has to do a go around, say on a landing or on a touch-and-go?

I would award higher points for the skills required to fly a slower more wind susceptible airplane though.

I guess it's just a matter of perspective as to what makes each of us grateful for the blessings we have. As the old bumper sticker says... "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work." YMMV.

two days down! It is windy. The Albi got another practice flight in and made me proud. Alot of top notch piloting was on display with all the beautiful planes being flown in difficult conditions. Hats off to everyone!

The wind isnt that bad its gusty but not all day it has a few dull spots im flying a fly baby bipe in pro am so i have to deal with it a little more then jets ..this event is great come check it out

Ken. Great coverage man. The gusty Lakeland wind is not very cub friendly and we appreciate all the guys that that have noticed. I wish everyone could be here! Nascars Juan Pablo montoya visits for the day. Seems like a down to earth guy and a real modler!
