Alberto Santos Dumont “La Demoiselle 1909“ Model 1/4
Alberto Santos Dumont's aircraft were slightly in construction.
Many of the supporting parts are made of bamboo and metal tubes.
The Demoiselle No. 20, technical data from the Musée de l'air documents.
Wingspan 6,35 m
Length 6.65 m
Height 2.20 m
Weight 120 kg
1 x Dutheil-Chalmers (Darracq) 35 hp
My 1:4 scale model:
Wingspan 1,58 m
Length 1.66 m
Part 1
Pine round bars
Brass
Brass tubes
Copper wire
Steel wire
Cable
Solder, and various small parts
Photos 1 and 2 show the drawings and lots of photos from the Musée de l'Air in France.
Photos 3,4,5 and 6 show the brass
All clamps are drilled for the brass tubes. So we get a better grip and the alignment is much simpler.

Part 2.
First we build the fuselage.
Lay down two of the wood sticks on the plan and transfer the position of the clamps.
The tubes we cut to the length and soldered with the clamps. Photo 7,8 and 9.
Pictures 11,12 and 13 shows the universal joint of the tail.
Photos 14, 15 and 16 shows the front section with the two motor mounts.
The main part constructed with five brass components.
Photo 17 shows the result.

I've been at for more years than I can remember, but I cannot visualize how you jigged all those pieces to hold together while you soldered. Nice fillets, so everything got hot enough, but still held together while hot????

Thanks Abu.
Les, I make it so.
Les, I make it so.
- [*]At first, I drill holes in the tube pieces.[*]Then I push the tube pieces on the round bars.[*]I drill the holes then 1-2 millimeters into the wood.[*]Then the connecting tubes sit tight in these fittings.[*]Everything can be put together and then soldered.[/list]
The three round bars are holding the position with rubber bands.
I work with a micro burner.

Hi,
again I have built new parts for the Demoiselle.
I want to cast the engine completely of resin.
For the form, I made all the engine parts of polyamide.
Before I can make the silicone form, I must make a few small engine parts.

The control wheel I made of two parts.
The outer ring is made of poplar wood, the inlay is made of aircraft plywood.
So I can solder the tail, I made two Templates.

Next part, the Tail.

With this method, you can build also complete fuselages with steel tube, as with the EIII.
It is very easy if you know how it goes.
I want to explain everything step by step, all can understand it then.
First.
Glue the drawing on a plywood.
All points you will solder must be cut from the plywood. (circle cutter).
Drill left and right 1 mm holes in the plywood…..how required.

All metal pipes saw fit.
The tubes are then fixed with 0.8 mm wire on the plywood.
All wires tighten and then the tubes brazing.

Hello,
now it’s going on.
At first I have individually brazed both parts.
Then I push together the pieces and soldered.
The Elevator of the Demoiselle is a construction of metal and bamboo.
Therefore, after the soldering are all pipes cut to length.
I've soldered a part of the joint with.

Hello, now we come to the wings.
First, we cut all wood strips for the ribs.
Then all strips will painted with wood primer.
I made a detailed drawing for the wing, with all positions for the spacer blocks and the wing spars. of balsa.
The drawing is pinned to the wooden board and then all the rip strips with clothespins attached to the drawing.
The two wing spars can now be glued to their position. I've built a form for the curvature, this we need later.
Continue soon

I think lots of interest in old machines. Most people are scared of the work that is put into them when many can't put an ARF together. I am just soaking up the details so don't stop posting.

Hello together,
now the next step.
Before I can install the wooden struts on the tail, I had to painted the joint.
As you can see in the picture, I have soldered two nuts on the pivot.
The most difficult so far was the exact color scheme.
I have organized 80 color maps to compare all the colors.
The next work is now the control, the seat and foot pedals.
