Go to Balsa USA's web pages to see the DR-1 info. It is up with the price and specs.

The DR1 is at about 30 lbs. Used a G62 with a 24x6 prop. Flew great at half throttle. The Albatross is using 3W 80. Not sure of the prop size.

Great looking plane, its too bad I HATE the way a G62 sounds. But then I guess I don't have to put one in my build do I? I am off to order one now. Nice job Balsa USA!

JeffEE,

I agree about the sound of the stock G62. But, if you put a mick reeves belt drive on it; the sound is awesome. Also you get to swing a 30x12 prop at a slower rpm.

I recall chatting with Dave Lewis at Rhinebeck a couple years ago, he was toying with the idea of doing a 1/2 scale N-11. Maybe that's next on his to-do list!

I was talking to Dave Lewis at Toledo, and he said there getting back to there bread and butter kits,1/4 scale.Probably a Sopwith Camel.I was hoping he'd go with the snipe, very competitive with the DIIV.-jeffo

Nope, your both wrong, Dave has on his lap top the drawings for one of his newest top secret project. It is a German plane, mono wing, fixed gear, two place. That is all I can say, I saw it at Toledo 2 years ago. I will have to go into the Witness Protection after this. As Sergeant Schultz would say" I know nothing"

All I can say is it will have two wings !!! I believe its claim to fame was the plane itself killed more pilots than the enemy did.

http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...D=7345&KW=SPAD is the best Effinger I have seen. I know of a Nieuport 17 fling around too.

Back in the day, when Bill was still with us, I got copies of two of his plans - a 1/3 J-3 Cub and a 1/3 Bonzo.

They were somewhat crude and shall we say presented quite a challenge if you were to use them to attempt an actual construction project.

Also picked up a set of the Scratch-A-Plane 1/4 size Nieuport 17 drawings. They look to be better.

Hey Wild Bill,

I've got my pre-order established for the DR1.........I have always wanted to fly a big tripe!
I also have a couple of spun aluminum Fokker cowls that are about 1/3 scale.....I was wondering, what is the diameter and depth of the DR1 cowl?

Thanks,
Art

Art,

Just got home from flying, only abot 50 degrees but the wind was straight down the runway. The tripe cowl is 13 15/16 wide and 4 3/4 deep. I have my wings all framed up for my tripe.

I was talking to the BUSA gang at Joe Nall and saw the triplane in the air. Plenty of power with the G-62, but I agree it needs to be silences a little more.

However, I am looking into the Toni Clark belt reduction drive on a G-38. Should be sufficient power for a 30 pound plane and with a good silencer, low noise.

If those plan falls through, it'll be a G-62 with a 24-6 prop. Low budget Dawn Patrol fighter!

My kit has already been put on the list for a review project in High Flight Magazine.

Here's a YouTube link to the BUSA Triplane landing.

Yes. Years ago I built a DR1 from Effinger plans. They were, to put it kindly, challenging. The shop drawing dimensions often did not match the plan dimensions and caused me a lot of wasted time and materials since I made a "kit" before I began building. There were many areas that needed re-engineering as well. If you acquire a plan, examine it carefully before you begin using it.

Absolutely Dick, and in combination with his stainless silencer #3877 it's also very quiet. Lots of planes fly over here with this proven combination

BobH,
My first WWI AC was a Fokker DRI from the WE Tech plans. It was a bit of a challenge. The tail as shown was completely sheeted and way overbuilt. There was really no info as to mounting the cabane struts and the landing gear was kind of weak. Fortunately at the time my father was building a DVIII/EV from the Holman plans so I borrowed some of the construction methods from those plans. I have the WE Tech plans for the DH4 and hope to build that someday. Now that I know what to look out for it should go smoother.
J
PS: do335a, Do you have Bonzo plans? I remember there being a Buster, but not a Bonzo. I like the Bonzo.
