RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Hi Doc,
Yes, that's a very good method, strong and relatively light. That's the way my 1/3 Dr.1 and 1/4 EV/DVIII
is set up and they have really seen their share of abuse and still holding up fine. That cord is just an old piece I had
laying around just to see if it was all going to work alright, I will reploace it with a new piece later and yes will smooth out
the holes real good.
Yes I will make the stab removable, I always do that when I can. It makes repair work, recovering, etc so much easier,
i.e. like when I recovered the tailfeathers on the EV/DVIII this past summer.

Hey Del!
How's it going? Lookin good, this is surely a different project. Doug Pierce from FLA. is currently finishing up a 1/3rd scale Fokker V 25 ! Yup he will be doing the maiden with in 3 weeks. I'm exspecting some pic's from him in a couple days. It's been a sorta secret project. But no more!! Doug is the guy who built Glenns other D-7 prototype.
I will be starting a GTM 1/2 Scale DR.1 in a couple weeks, There will be 9 built at the same time, by various people. This will be officially anounced when I start the build thread here on RCU.
Happy Landings

Howdy Tom,
Great to hear from you, how ya been?? That 1/3 V25 sounds really great, when you get the pictures feel
free to post some here, would love to see it.
Nine half scale Dr.1's, man that's mind blowing, can't wait to see this build, I'd say it's in good hands with
you heading it up.
How many will try making it to the 2014 Dayton DP?? All I hope.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Ok, back at it, I got all the gussets put in place, I used 1/64th ply on all the uprights and 1/16 balsa on the cross spreaders.
Just for kicks decided to check the weight so far, fuselage so far is 1lb 15oz. Put the engine on (Saito 36 gasser) and
together it's 5lb 10oz. I think that's pretty good, I would like to bring the finished plane to around 16lbs.
It looks like that with a 90 degree exhust fitting, I may be able to have the exhust exit pretty close to scale location.

Looking good Del!
When people see this at a show people will say, "Oh that's Dels plane." because no one will have it but you. If you want to find Del, just look for his plane. I plan on getting me a Funaero 65" Albatros and and do a little "bashing" on it. Just got my O.S. 91FS II Surpass (w/o pump) for it a few days ago on E-bay for $140. Hope to start the kit in a few months.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Started on the cowl this weekend. It is entirely built up with 1/8 lite ply and balsa. The side pieces are
three 1/8 laminated parts, one left and one right.
Takes some sanding to get them even and square.
Glue the sides to the crutch plus front former, again squaring it all up.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
You put a 1/4 dowl into the former in the rear into the front former of the fuselage. You drill two holes into
the front part of the cowl through the front of the fuselage, add 4-40 blind nuts on the inside of the fuselage
that way the front of the cowl is secured to the fuselage.
Formers and stringers are then added to the cowl top.
By the time Fokker built this plane they had changed the exhust, it was completely covered and exited
through the side panel.
That also made the radiator top tank symetrical, no notch.

Looking sweet! I'll let you know when I purchase the Albi. I'm not sure if I want to get the BUSA D8 first, I have a month to decide. In the next issue of MA look at page 82 and tell me if those planes look familiar?

Ok, hear's the radiator being framed up, all 1/8 lite ply.
Added the screen and fitted 1/8 balsa side pieces.
Added the ply pieces to the front of the screen, (screen sandwitched in and very strong), plus added the
top balsa former (oversized), dry fitted in place, looked good so glued it all together.
In addition to the former being oversized, the sides are also, this allows for getting it all alligned
with plenty of material for fitting it all up.
The cowl has a lot of parts, but take your time, keep it all square it makes a very nice and stong
structure.
Now I'll let it set for a while for the glue to cure and start shaping it later today.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Here we go again! I wish we had a source for a good radiator mesh that looked more scale in 1/4 scale. I asked Glenn about it and he said it is just to small to do the same way as his 1/3rd scale DVII. There has to be something somewhere. I have searched high and low.
Another thing, if the screen gets damaged the way BUSA has you build the cowl, replacing it is a real chore.
Looks good Dell. Watching this one closely.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Ok, I'll try again, having issues posting today.
Got the balsa blocks glued to the top of the radiator. Shaping the outline of the radiator top is easy as you
use the top, side and front of the ply formers as a guide for roughing in the shape.
Now I'll start working down the radius.

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Somebody said that their model flew with a high wing loading. Perhaps the full size aircraft did as well, and thats why they only built two. Just a thought. Could the GTM 1/3 scale radiator be used on the 1/4 scale plane? The screen that we use now is not very scale so how bad could it be? A couple of things for your build. I put baffles in the front to help keep the motor cool, and it would be easy for you to do now, rather than later. And the idea of putting the muffler in a scale position is easy to do with the big Saito. Keep up the good work.

Once Del paints the screen it will look better. He could double mesh the screen (one behind the other tightening the holes) Try it Del and tell me what you think?

RE: 1/4 Fokker V29
Ok, I got the radiator top sanded down pretty good. I should have used one large block instead of two smaller ones.
One of them was a little harder balsa and took some extra time to get both sides pretty even.
I got the lower cowl part or chin piece from Fiberglass Specialties, did some preliminary trimming on it, not bad so far,
will tweek it in a little at a time.

I have some aluminum mesh that I got at Hobby Lobby (crafts) that is intended to be used for moldiing the shapes of things for reproduction. Im not sure how it works for that but its a nice small diamond pattern that looks (to my eye) better than plain screen. I wouldnt change what you have done so far as it looks great and why do over? But next time you get into the craft store you might look for some (Id ask for help) and just keep it around for some other project if it seems like it would work . Its not real costly and you might find a use for it.
