Where did you get the G 4 material? The G10 that came with the kit, the center holes were too big and they were too tall, so I tossed them out.
That looks real nice.

Can you post measurements so we can try to duplicate your mounts?

Thanx

I have a few questions: What covering material are you going to use and paint? Also I suppose your going to replicate the Fokker streaked effect and have you thought of a technique to make it look realistic?

I don't have a clue as to what I am covering it with. I have some extra 1/4 scale wings I can experiment with.

I think I have settled on the final scheme though.

Jasta B or 2. 204/17

The Jasta did not get their Dr1's until January 10th 1918

Paul Baumer Feburary 1918

These were at Toledo 08 and I don't know anything about it, other than it is exactly like it should be painted,
without the black wingtips, and 11 crossed painted on it.

Rebel Flyer

I covered my 1/3 scale DR1 with Sigs Koverall, used Polycrylic to seal the weave then painted it with latex.
Streaking effect turned out well.

Look for the light weight dacron from Aircraft Spruce. Really cheap. Around $4 a yard x 50" . That wide roll gives good yield on these big planes. Shrinks great with heat, and can be held on with balsa rite or dope. I will be using this on my new tripe.

This photo of Baumer would suggest that it should have black wing tips. At least at one point in its life.

nut,

The pic that you posted was taken sometime AFTER April 1918. Note the DVII in the background. I want to do the early crosses, and that plane has the very thick balkankruze straight style crosses.
Also the crosses on the top of the bottom wing have been painted over with the black wingtips by this time.

Good morning, Rebel Flyer

The 1/3 Fokker Dr.I at Toledo in 2008 is the late Del Johnson's prototype Glenn Torrance Models triplane, and is indeed finished as Baumer's 204/17. Del primarily used the "Fokker Dr.I Aces of WWI" book for most of the color documentation.

http://www.amazon.com/Fokker-Aces-Wo.../dp/1841762237

Baumer originally has the Iron Crosses on the plane as Del had, then later changed to the straight crosses, along with the black wingtips. Del's build thread was a great hit on RCU here just a few years ago.

Bye the bye - Del took 3rd at Toledo that year with the triplane, after originally not intending to compete at all (the plane instead was going to be featured in the GTM booth).

Very best regards,

Lee McDuffee

Hello gentlemen
I plan on covering my triplane with 100% linen, to be doped, than streaked after the turcoise blue is painted on the bottom. I am going to do a factory fresh scheme of the triplane with the Anchor, I believe it's 577/18. After two years of having the plane I will then paint it in the squadron color scheme with the anchor.

Hi Martin!
Thanks for posting that pic. Yes that's the one. But like I said factory colors first. Then paint over the streaking with the yellow dope so the under color show's thru a little.

I had that material for at least 20 years. I wish I had more. Those horns Glenn gave us are correct. Refer to my D-8 build and find the section of those horns being made and finished , your questions will be answered. The holes are not too big. You must put a sleave in them, then a turnbuckle if you wish to adjust the cable.

Great color profile for your tripe. Glad your using the linen and dope authentic materials used in early aircraft design. I often wondered if the pilot who chose the anchor symbol made a statement of the DR1s speed. Seems like a nice gathering of builders in this post…very influential.

Rebel, I just got some "Tufnol" from Toni Clarke in Germany. It is available in a variety of thicknesses, (FYI 3mm is approx 1/8") I ordered 5 sheets on a Monday and had it delivered on Friday! And it was about $10 from Europe. See here:

Mc Master Carr have all thicknesses and sheets from 6" square to much larger, Reasonable prices and fast standard shipping. They have G10 and the flameproof stuff like Glen uses, G4 or something like that. I have foot square sheets of several thicknesses. Good stuff.

How do you cut and shape the G-10? I know a lot of folks use it but I don't think they ever said how they cut it.

Thanks

I found out the hard way how hard G-10 it to work with. What a B****...
I'm curious too.

Also Tommy, is the plane you're doing going to have a black or yellow anchor on the fuse side?

I have seen dipictions of both.

You don’t have to use G10 for the control horns. Just get some really thin plywood and cut the shapes out epoxy together to desired thickness and sand to shape. G10 is a very strong fiber plastic material that is way to hard to cut unless you have a laser cutter which most of us don’t. The plywood is super strong duet to 0/90 wood layup and will not pull apart.

Here are a couple of 1/4 scale Nieuport aileron quadrant "cores" made of the Tufnol. I cut it with a fine jigsaw blade and needed a replacement blade after each! However, I do find it pretty easy to cut, file and sand.

I use a band saw, jig saw, belt sander, files etc.... Yeah it's hard on blades but it finishes nice and is strong and glues well. Good stuff!

Band saw!!!! And also, This stuff is the BEST for contol horns. I started using this stuff back in the early 80's for my control horns. Glue some multipal layers together sand and shape. Great stuff for many applications.
