Hey TK

Just found the build thread,  Still working out the gear reduction for this beast. I think I'm going with the DA 170. Are you still going to use the zdz 160?
If you want one these gear reductions, actually cog belt reduction, I'll need to get specs on the zdz.

Your Bill Hollands friend right?
I'm still on the fence on the ZDZ, But yes I am VERY interested in the reduction gear set up. I think a DA -150 with the reduction gear will work fine also, The 1/2 scale D-6 that Paul built and flys has a DA- 150 straight up and it flies fine on that. I figure I'm looking at a 85 to 95 lb. airplane, so any thing of 150 and up will work. I might sell my ZDZ for cheap money as to get myself a DA.
Glad you have tooned in. Get ahold of Glenn and get building! Parts will be slow for awhile. I'm waiting on my ribs so to start building them up.
But yes I am very interested in the reduction gear.

Hello, Time to get back to work on the Fokker. I've been restoring a cub which is also posted. Glenn has sent me my ribs and parts for the mid wing. I started gluing the cap strips and nose caps onto the ribs. This is a slow process so it will take a week just to get the ribs done. I am waiting for some metal fittings before I can start gluing up the spars. I have 2-1/2 years to complete this project. So I do plan to build other planes during this one. I do know there are a few other guys also building these and that they are way ahead of my progress. But they do not post.

I have built the GTM 1/3 scale, still yet to maiden.
1/2 scale should be pretty awesome in the air.
Great thread.

Hi Craig
The 1/3rd scale GTM tripe is an awesome kit for sure. This version will be a little different in that it will have box spars with no shear webbing. The spar will have a continuous ply sheet top and bottom with four peices of fir on front and rear of spar. The fir has been ripped and reglued to keep straight with grains reversed. Also different to the 1/3 is that the middle wing will be in two peices not one. So that the center section of the aircraft will stay on the model not upsetting the detail to the gun section. The two center wing panels will plug in. The top wing will bolt to the struts in a scale manner as the bottom wing will also stay the same as the 1/3rd. Plus we will have all ball and cups on the model as the full scale. This will be a slow build, as I mentioned I am building for the Dayton show in 2014.

It looks like the "cap strips" are like the original's - on both sides of the rib, rather than across the top edge.

Lots of work! I look forward to seeing it at Rhinebeck (eventually).

Hi Martin
Yes cap strips are on the side. Trying to keep as much scale as possible. I'll tell ya they are a pain in the a to put on. Very time consuming. Plus trying to finish the cub at the same time.
Not much to look at, managed to cap 7 more ribs tonight.

Finished up one set of ribs for the center wing. I will build that one first. It will be in two peices when done, and slide into a aluminum box spar in the spar area of the fuselage. The wing tips were designed after Achim Ingels DR.1 build. GTM provides an excellent copy. They are made up of plywood and spruce, and are extremly strong.
Was wondering about the stock weight being used on the wings. So I threw all of what I have onto a scale. Now this is all the spar stock for 3 wings, minus the steal hardware. Also one set of ribs, And the 6 peices of 1/16th ply for the spars. Total-19.4 Lbs. Now figure on the rest of the ribs which is only two lbs. But also remember, none of the stock is cut to finish size, so there will be a lot of material to minus. Fabric and dope, servo's, ect. I think the total wing weight for all three will most likely be in the 30 - 35 lb. range.
The total model weight will most likely be around 80- to 110 lbs. A DA 150 on a belt drive swinging a 48 to 52 inch prop would fly it nicely.

Great work on the ribs and now I am beginning to understand why Don is always encouraging me to stop slapping so much extra weight and glue into my builds.
(I guess I should put the effort into better landings.)

Do you mind explaining the belt drive? Is it more scale or a result of needing to make a realitively small footprint engine work in such a large airframe?

Kelly
A belt drive is used to be able to swing a giant prop, usaually scale dia. And to get the RPM's to a more realistic speed. The planes fly much better also. But you have to get used to them. Plus they sound so much better from the screaming large 2 stroke engines, you can actually hear the prop noise. Oh and by the way I'm a very heavy builder myself.

While I'm waiting on parts and plans from Glenn I decided to start laminating the tail feathers. I like to use maple on my planes for the outer laminates. You can buy maple at your local home depot or lowes stores. I rip down the maple to 3/8ths thick, or plan it. Then I rip it on my table saw to just under a 1/16th. This wood is extremely strong and bends nicely with out soaking it in water to maker it soft. Unless ofcourse if your doing a tight bend then you will need to soak it. I then make a jig out of plywood attach that to the table over some wax paper or cellophane. Be sure to get a candle and rub the edge of the jig to keep the wood from getting glued to it. I like to glue all the pieces together first then stretch them around the jig and secure them with blocks of wood screwed down to the table. This whole procedure only took me an hour and a half from start to finish. I'm having problems down loading pictures I will try later.
