RE: 1/3 scale FOKKER D8
Well after much thought and research I decided to cover my plane with Sig koverall fabric. Every plane I have built in the last twenty years has been covered with plastic heat shrink; now I want to jump into something that I wish I would have learned some time back so this wouldn’t be the first time. I really want to do a good scale looking job with the rib stitching and all. The more I think about it makes me want to paint the lozenge camo scheme on the fuse. I think I can do it; I have a pretty good bit of fabric, just ordered some sig stix-it and there clear nitrate dope. I didn’t get any thinner, can I use Acetone for the thinner?

I have attached a pic of my 1/3 Ron Weiss D-VIII. I purchased it as a wreck and restored it. G-62 power. The plans are not of the quality of Nick Ziroli's deigns but will get the airframe built as you have discovered. For examaple, the Left side of the Stab is LONGER as referenced from airframe centerline than the Right side. (or the other way around as I do not clearly remember.) I need to add the Cabane and L/G wood fairings to complete. It has about 20 gflights on it now.
Very well done cockpit on your D-VIII.
The flight characteristics are good but needs Aileron Differential to improve Aileron performance. I recommend 1-1/2" Up and 3/4" Down (full rate). I did mine with-in my radio.
As to wing incidence, I copied the plans. After the first flight I added a small 1/8" thick ply shim disc at the rear cabane attach points. I'm, please with it now. Prior to this addition, when attempting to trim the aircraft it would pitch up or down slightly hunting for neutral flight. Shimming the wing as mentioned cured that. My airframe was not the best built as discovered when removing the original covering and likely had contributed to the need for the additonal wing trimming as mentioned. I'm sure yours will be fine.
Best of luck with yours.

Hey Rebel,
Some of the WW1 guys around here (myself included) have been using minwax polycrylic satin
in place of dope. Works great, does a good job of filling the weave of the koveral and it has
almost no odor. Works good right out of the can, but use the brush on kind (it comes in spray cans too).

So consider me joined... I bought a D8 and lost it during the maiden flight. After looking at the plans and how the original was built, I made the decision to completly rebuild instead of repair. I would have had to make an entire fuse anyway, an do some major repairs to the wing. I am by no means a master builder, but it looks like a reasonably easy build, and what the heck, I've only got ot do one wing. I should have a kit in hand late next week, but I made some headway with the tailfeathers. I'm going to use more scale hinging, the leading edge of the elevator is a dowl, and that will be strapped to the trailing edge of the stab and form the hinge. Fairly simple, and easy to repair should the need arise.
Sad to say I didn't notice to hear about the stab being off untill I built the elevators. Oh well. Hopefully I an figure it out when I get it on the plane...

Well Im trying to get some stitching put together. I saw someone doing this on a You Tube Video. I took a board, put a brad in the edge 1 inch apart on both sides, sprayed it with a little 3M adhesive, laid down some ÂĽ in. graph paper then wax paper. Laid down some cloth, and then laid some dental floss across the fabric from nail to nail. I put 3 coats of thinned nitrate over everything and the next day cut ÂĽ in strips for the stitching.
Will be laying these on sometime next week…

Cool; thanks for the information Sean… Yeah it sure would be nice if I could come down there and check it out in person… maybe after completion for a photo shoot…
We need more D Vlll’s I hope you decide to start one… I just started to put on some stitching on the tail feathers, working on it when I can; I still have 90% to go LOL
I seem to have two many hobbies, now I’m trying to fill the freezer with venison….
Let us know if you decide to build one and keep us posted..
