    Best striping tape?

Hey gang, I'm beginning the process of using striping tape for detailing certain parts of my Sig 1/5 scale Cub. I've been trying Pactra tape, but it doesn't seem to stretch around curves very well. Is there something better? Or is there a technique I need to develop?

    Thanks!

I use 3M tape, from the auto parts store.

Yes... 3M tape is the best. Its 3M's Scotch Plastic Tape (blue color). You can get it in various width sizes starting at 1/16". Great for going around curves...once applied holds it's shape (unlike some of the 'red' stuff found in LHS), easy to remove/reposition, leaves a sharp painted line, etc.

Whoops! ... I was speaking about 3M's masking tape. After re-reading I see you were talking about striping tape. However, my previous comments are applicable to the striping tapes you find in auto paint stores, too. I use both with great success...

Actually, the OP isn't clear about what he is asking.

The tape that I mention is for adding that extra "detail" to a model.

If he is asking about masking tape, 3M also manufactures Fine Line Tape, that yields sharp, crisp, lines, and goes around corners well. It, too, is available from automotive paint stores.

And If you don't like the price for the commercial stuff. take a roll of black electricians tape, lay it out on a piece of glass. Take a metal straight edge, and cut your own. Whatever width your heart desires.

3M masking tape from auto paint supply, stick on pin stripeing tape I get at the auto parts store. I only use 3M masking tapes for painting. Worst tape I used was Great Planes 1/8" vinyl masking tape the stuff would stretch then creep back. almost impossible to keep from stretching it.

I just stopped at the auto-paint supply last week and asked for some 3M fine-line tape.  It was ~$8 per roll.  They had an equivalent tape from Norton for ~$6 per roll.  I haven't used it yet on actual paint masking, but it looks identical to the 3M.

    RE: Best striping tape?

Was looking for stick-on and leave-on tape for (for example) where the canopy meets the fuselage. If 3M makes a good tape i'll try that.

FYI, I tried a product called Frog Tape recently, for painting the lightning bolts onto my Koveralled Sig Cub. Talk about crisp! I was very impressed.

Either way, thanks everyone for the input.

Try some 3M automotive pinstripe tape. It will hold very well and you can get it in many widths.

If tape doesn't make you happy then get one of these. It uses monokote or what ever covering you happen to be using.

Thanks; not really applicable to a painted fabric covering
