Default ZK-BLK got airborne today.

The wind finally died down and allowed me to get ZK-BLK out of the shop. First flight went well with no trim required. Great flying A/C.

I watched Monument Men last night on DVD and low an behold there was a Tiger Moth shuttling Matt Damon's character to Paris! I think it should have won an Oscar for best cameo by a pre-1940 airplane!

Hi Guys !

Question ! My Tiger Moth is powered by a Saito 150 fs. It goes up like an elevator every time I push the stick forward ! I mean, even a LITTLE bit ! Kind of a pain to fly constantly having to input down elevator ! Is this a balance issue ? Any suggestions ? I LOVE this bird !

Thanks, Don

My first Tiger Moth had the same issue with wanting to climb. Had a bunch of down elevator trim in it. The one above has ten Sub-C cells, five behind the engine to supply the glow plug, and the other five just inside the firewall to supply the radio. No down trim was required with the elevators flat with the stab. Haven't checked the CG yet but will.

Don, here are few ideas based on what you mentioned. I would check the CG and the engine thrust, then adjust it as need. Then I would adjust the elevator linkage to build in a little down elevator. Remember if you have a nyrod push rods like golden Rod, etc. they expand and contract considerably with temperature changes. My last suggestion would depend on what radio you have you may want to setup and exponent or adjust servo travel depending on it's capabilities.

This thread just jogged my memory concern a conversation with a long time R/C magazine contributor mostly build articles on his own plans. He once asked if I had noticed in just about every build article or new product test for an ARF/RTF airplane how the author stated what an easy maiden flight the airplane had? His opinion was it was a lot of hooey. He said he had never had a maiden that some problem didn't raise it's ugly head. Now he also said it could just be his luck but he was in his 70th decade of life and still waiting for the first one to happen. On the other side of the coin when I got back into the hobby in 2004 the LT40 I built the maiden flight went fantastic. I wanted pictures so I tapped the local 5 time nationals pattern chap to take her up. He was either being really nice or I really did nail the balance laterally and CG. (File under blind squirrel finds a nut department or God looks after fools and little children department) I did notice he only touched the trim tabs once.

Default Tiger Moth

Thanks, Richard and Mike for the input I can "dial in" down trim when flying. I am curious as to WHY this is happening I think it needs more weight in the nose than I currently have. Richard, I would be interested in hearing about your C/G if you have a chance to check it ! For now, I'll fly it as is

Thanks again, Don

I flew my first Tiger Moth many flights with a fair bit of down elevator for level flight. It is now retired for a bit while I recover it. The second one above was stripped and while I was at it I added the glow plug driver as below and decided to move the CG forward while I was at it. So I have five Sub-C Nicd cells right behind the engine (Saito 150) and five Sub-C NiMh right behind the firewall. My thoughts were that the CG should be moved forward to eliminate the need for the down elevator trim.

I flew this Tiger Moth ZK-BLK yesterday for six flights and not a bit of down was required. In fact when taking off I had to jump on a bit of up elevator to stop the tail from going high. Once in the air it flew like a charm as I didn't even touch the elevator trim. Honest!

Yes, Richard. I only have 3 oz. in the nose of mine ! Bet those batteries add up to a lot more than that !!
By the way, an OUTSTANDING job of recovering your Moth !!

Thanks for the compliment.

There is so much lift from the wings of the Tiger Moth that the extra weight of all the batteries is hardly noticeable. Still floats in on landing and I set the RPM to 5500 for very scale like speed. Just love it.

Here is a picture of a Tiger Moth from England that the other one I have is going to look like. I am about half way trough now. Thought it was a bit different.

I see every one is commenting about the Tiger Moth wanting to always climb. I own a real one. It does the same thing. For straight & level flight, you have to pull the power back & add down trim. That's just the nature of the Tiger Moth. There's nothing wrong with your models.

Finally got ZK-BLK in the air. There was a strong cross wind so a bit tough getting a smooth flight.

I finally Got my Tiger moth up last week...
I had Lots of UP elevator.... and was abit jumpy.... adding down trim helped, but I believe you when you say.... ADD MORE WEIGHT>>...
I flew mine with my OS 1.60 twin... I have the AIR-bleed style carb, and it makes for VERY rich midrange... but perfect TOP and Idle...
The Wing transports are a JOKE LOLOLOL ....actually it took me A LOOOOONG time for field setup... as I removed the RED joiners ( the wings kept tipping over and twisting....
it was VERY frustrating.... I will do the mod that the other Gentleman listed ( use flying wire to hold wing from falling forward, or modify the wing joiners...
Other that that .... It was a great flying plane...

I am HAPPY to see, that CG can make the RIGHT direction change =(no elevator)....
Perhaps I will just add a saito 325 5cyl Radial and make a round cowl? HMMM....
It would fly great, and sound great, but would look awfully odd wouldn't you think?

Do you have pics showing the location of the fuel tank?

I will add some picts of the fuel tank location and post them..
The tank was pulled back (from it's designed location) and then banded in with brass eye hooks.

The directions leave more to be desired...... I don't think there was ANY talk about the tank and how to secure it...
I am with you.... I can understand pictures better than written instructions.
Justin.

This is addressed to anyone who would like to chime in pl feel free to do so.
Today I took out my Moth for a maiden flt which I had to abort as the wind picked up.
I realized that the included wing jig intended for transporting the wings leaves a lot to be desired as it slips off the already slick covering.....

If you have any tips on improving it pl. share it with the rest of us as the gears in my head are already overheating...
Thanks

Default H9 Tiger Moth Wing Supports

Here are a couple of pics of a solution that a few of us use. The blue foam seems to work well and holds the wings in place while attaching to fuse. The other end is attached with servo mounting screws and a piece of ply over the existing tube.

We don't use the rubber bands!

Three of us have had the ply tang that holds the wing on break loose. It is a good idea to use some CA to make sure it will not come out.

Default Wing jig

Once it dawned on me that the upper jig support was at the wrong incidence angle I modified it to match the wing as assembled. It is now glued in place.
- With that done I can now slip the jig into place with the wing still on the plane.
- Added some thin shock cords instead of the original rubber bands.
- Pulled the wing assembly out.
- Inserted a vertical piece of a "Lowes" yard stick with small block spacers pressing against the jig to prevent it from slipping out of place. I also slid a wire push rod throught the tab holes to keep it in place.
- Needless to say I also added the wire cross rigging at the wing struts which are not in the picture.

The pictures are self explanatory but your comments would just make it better.

have about 2 years of happy flying with my tiggy so far and yes it will climb under full power. MVVS 30 petrol in the nose. I am about to play with throttle to elevator mix to help with that.

Rarely fly about 1/3 throttle except when I want to do a loop, stall turn or roll so the trim issue rarely causes a problem.

It is delightful and fun to fly and keeps you using the rudder all the time which is a good thing.

Get about 15 to 18 min flights out of the standard tank with best being about 25 mins.

Put a Mobious camera on it too which is like a GoPro. Interesting to watch afterwards.

Mate of mine has just done a kit bash on his in the scheme of the one he flew in New Zealand as an 18 year old, he is mid 70s now. Lovely to see it in that scheme.

Happy Happy!
