1/4 Scale Stinson Reliant
This Model was scratch built from Wendell Hostetlers Plans. It has a 126 inch wing span, is 83" long, and has a wing area of 2310 sq. in. She tops out at around 48 lbs. and runs of a 5.8 cubic inch, swinging a 28-10
The finish paint scheme is the 1930's Civil Aeronautics Authority. The CAA is what the FAA is today. The colors were black and yellow, very striking color scheme.
The story behind this build is that 16 years ago I aquired this model already started. The fuselage was 60% complete as far as the framing is concerned. The wings were started as was the tail. There was a tremendous amount of work yet to be done. I put the plane up in storage and basically forgot about it. Last June I brought here out and took a good look at the plane relizing that alot had to be changed and fixed and built yet. I wanted something new for Rhinebeck so I went at it full steam. I worked on the model almost every day for three months. nights and weekends. I had decided to paint the plane in the colors I wanted, Black and yellow, I did not even relize there were Reliants out there in those colors. One day sitting on the throne reading one of my 1930's Flying magazines I came across one picture of two stinsons side by side in black and yellow!!! I was blown away. I found my color scheme. I still have much left for detailing, the cockpit has yet to be done, and she only has one flight on her. I did the test flight at RHINEBECK AERODROME. I was actually still painting it the day before I left for the Jamboree. This is my second WH stinson, I built one years ago only to loose it on the third flight from bad batteries. I used some of the parts of of that airplane.

This is where I started to document the build. As you can see I used a small plastic model to get my details. Here I have already completed the tail feathers and have worked my tail wheel from my first stinson into this one. I also used all my door hardware from the first one. The whole top of the model was not built including the windsheild structure. All fiberglass was purchased from Fiberglass speicialties.

Here are some more pic's. I also was able to use all my old struts from the first one. I have a lot of pictures of my first stinson, but they are not on the computer I will copy them so I can post them later.

Some thing needs to be done about this web site, I'm still having trouble uploading pictures. Plus I can't find anywhere on the site where you can contact anyone to talk about this problem. Does anyone have any ideas ?

You can try contacting RCU-Admin:

But good luck getting anything done, given how persistent this problem has been for well over a year.

More engine cowl shots, also I reused my old dash board from my first stinson. A little rough, but good enough. Just a fun scale plane.

Here I hve fitted the wing struts which will be covered with wood, they are made from aluminum. Also I am getting the wings finished up ready for covering.

In these photo's I have covered the wings and all tail surfaces. I used Polycrylic for my sealant, first time. I think the second time around I'll do better.

This model to me is just a fun scale flier, so the finish had to be cheap and quick. Krylon was used on the whole plane. |I will show all the process coming up.

A few photo's showing the rib tapes and glue style stiching. Also started priming the fuse and have painted the tail. I used krylon flat white under the yellow, only after I discovered the gray was too dark and difficult to cover with the yellow. I'm not used to using these types of finishes on a model for I have mostly used Dope for finishing, and latex house paint.
