Resin RADIAL ENGINE Build

Hello Guys & Gals, wanted to share the latest chapter in my SIG WACO SRE "rebuild" with you all that I think came out pretty cool looking for the time that was put into it. This build is for the beginner to the average builder, a simple way to spice up that Classic or WWII Warbird you have, hell....even hang on your wall.

Painting wise... I wanted to keep it very simple so anybody can do it, I'm not breaking out the airbrush or pastels/chalks just a couple paint brushes and 4 colors, Black, Grey, Chrome Silver & Steel. (I know the steel is a wrong color but it's what I had handy) so you super scale goo-ru's take it easy on me. also on my spelling

The pictures I am hoping will be pretty much self explanatory but if you have any questions feel free to ask or even add additional info/ideas to this thread. Post you radials, how to mount photos, whatever you have regarding a fake radial.

OK, I bought a Nick Ziroli 7 1/4" Dummy Engine FTE Cast Resin, http://www.ziroliplans.com/zirolipla..._frameset.html - some 1/8", 5/32" & 3/16" alum tubing, and I think it was 3/32" for making the ignition ring, or whatever its called?

As received it was 6.5oz. hmmmmmm..... we need to lighten that up a tad, so the first thing I did was get the grinder out and started removing resin, when I finished with that it was came out 3.1oz., could have taken more but I thought that was good enough. The next thing I did I drilled all my holes, when drilling the "push rod holes" start with a smaller bit and work your way up to the the size you need, dont take it all at once or you will not be a happy camper!![:@]

Next I washed/scrubbed the radial with dish soap than with comet cleanser and then wiped it down with lacquer thinner to clean the surface.

Next I painted, cut spark plugs (golden rod), here the most time consuming part of the whole project but the most important part to have the look, cutting the push rod tubes, cutting the tubes I used a new #11 blade put pressure on your mark and rolled the tube with the blade then broke off with fingers, hown the inside of tube with blade.

On the "ignition ring" I'll call it?...(jump in and tell us what it's called if you like)... but I forgot to take pics of the one I built so I made up a quick demo picture pack, made smaller but so you can see what I did.

the ring I built for the radial I just bent it around a tin can, the first pic you see I just used a sanding drum, I also ground a flat spot on the outside of the tubing so it would make it easier to drill for the solder (plug wire), the wire I connected the tubing with is music wire.

always dreaded doing the ring but it's really not that hard to do, lets just see if it holds up under the all the vibration, once it was all installed you would be really surprised how rigid it is when mounted, next time I would probably take more time and use music wire for the plug wires.

willey

the windshield you see is just for effect, I will be making an all new with frame after the cowl is mounted... I will be posting a thread on the Waco when I get further along.

I used one of these in my Ziroli P-47, but I needed the nose weight, so i did not lighten it. You are right about the ring and vibration. Mine has come loose again and needs to be reglued. I may use a more flexible glue or even silicone. With a little doctoring (like yours) they are a very realistic looking engine.

OUT-STANDING!!! And a perfect example of how a really well made and highly detailed scale feature doesn't have to add a lot of weight! Well done, sir! Well done!

Awesome work Mr. Willey!
I too used the same engine on my 1/4 scale Stinson Reliant. You do fantastic work. Now seeing yours I have to revisit my work and polish out my aluminum push rods.
Thanks for sharing your skills.

willey: You did an absolutely fabulous job on that radial!! All it needs now is some oil dripping from it!

Here is a TopFlite version I did a while back.

Willey, some really great workmanship here. I would suggest that you post a couple of pics in the Golden Age and Vintage section here on RCU. There's a very large thread on the Waco YMF in various forms and sizes. This thread is very serious about scale Waco stuff and this engine, and your workmanship, will fit right in
