Hey Bob, where did you get the idea that "Spruce" ply was used for the sheeting? I believe it was Birch not Spruce but I do agree that although beautifully done the grain should not be that pronounced. Anyway, here is something you will all enjoy!

Wildbills, I believe that Dave Johnson uses a fine tip (black) Sharpie to simulate the braids. Just lightly make an indention with the tip after making the panel lines. BTW, has anyone seen or heard from DJ lately?

I was hoping HE(cocobear) might pipe in here and give us some info. Another question for you experts out there, how about nail spacing.

Here's some more stuff. According to Koloman Mayerhofer. i use blued steel nails and brass screws. the nailing patern was 3 nails 1 screw.
most likely they used steel screws as brass was in very short supply.
if i have to start again i would use steel screws as the corrosion problem seems to be not serious.
I did not find a reference for the spacing of the nails and screws but some fudging can be done looking at the photo's. Koloman also comments that "Casein glued plywood" was used for the sheeting originally.

DJ buit some little Albi not to long ago and commented on it. Maybe it was a few weeks?
I have the Nat'l Air and Space book on Stroope. I haven't read it (I should!) it shows the total rebuild etc. Not sure if the fastener spacing is mentioned or not? Now I might have to look! lol
By the way.. I was at the Garber Facility way back when (the old restoration facility for the NASM). Standing on the floor.. was Stroope right after it was finished. It was BEAUTIFUL. It looked like a fine piece of furniture.. Unfortunately I didn't have a decent camera with me at the time.. bummer!

OK Alby fans, my staining process has started, I am going to have to do a little sanding in some places where some glue is and some sanding in some places where I did not sand so swell to begin with, but it's a start. I stained with Golden Oak.

Nieuport,
I do not believe this plane is going to be in Toledo, nothing is finalized yet. Anything is possible though.
Aubu,
I think so too, I am also going to put the simulated nail markings too. I need the weather to warm up so I can get a coat of clear(polycrylic) on it. It looks like it's going to be awile though, just got 6 inches of fresh snow and it's not supposed to get above 40 for a couple of weeks. Like I said above, I still have some sanding and re- staining to do in a few spots before I can add a coat of clear.

On my Albatros CI, with a darker stained finish, I simulated the nails with the tip of a sharpie. The use of the sharpie is a compromise. Up close the marks seem a bit too obvious, but at a couple of feet they give the right impression. It's a lot like rivets on the WWII models. I based the placement of the rows on what I could see in photos and what I knew of the placement of formers. I certainly can't be certain it's 100% correct. Really no need for precision spacing.

WildBill I was just wondering if anyone else was working on one.
Sometimes a whole group of people will build a new kit when they come out.. I was just hoping to see a few people posting on this one. I followed your build on the Busa 1/3 DR1 thread also.
My 1/3 Pup buried me in the shop .. and then I inherited a Bud Nosen P51 project ... so many projects so little room.

RE: Albatros Dva
I have been on a modeling sabatical:-) I have had good luck with the Polycrylic and gas. Albie is now 6 and still looks good (at least to me). As to the nails. Prior to staining, I take the finest marker I can find and dot every panel line. Next I lightly sand with 220 so that the "nails" fade in and out as they seem to in most pictures I have seen. I then proceed with Minwax Golden Oak and the 4~5 coats of Polycrylic. I think it looks reasonably convincing. The sanding is required or the effect is to stark.
