Robert, I've never tried using dowel rod for wing tips, overall is it easier or harder to do over laminations? Keep up the great work!

Sorry for taking so long to respond Vincent. They are a bit harder, but, it gives a much better finished edge. And the dowel is also much less crushable or much more ding proof.
I have been working feverishly to clear some property we bought. It will be another week or so before I'm done enough to slow down. Then I will get back to the Pitts build.

Can't wait for you to return Robert, not a whole lot of building going on in these threads lately. Since I'm in between builds I'm starting to get the shakes pal, so give me the "fix" that I need....I may have to go in the basement and start to sniff the glue bottles LOL.

If you do that VJ, just remember one thing. Hold the bottle at least one inch away.if your hands are shaking and you squeeze it a little, you'll have to then sniff de-bonder. That's not as fun as the glue. Don't ask me why I know this. LOL. Steve.

Hello all. I know it has only been a few days (actually near a month) since any building has been done but it seems like forever. Today I have been putting lots of little pieces that were left out while I made decisions as to how I wanted to do things, such as strut mounts, cabane, flying wire type and point of attachment. Of which I have decided the following. The strut mounts will be scale like with bolts I make to run through the wing. The top wing will be one piece. The kit cabane will be replaced with one I make. Flying wires will come from Aeroscale and be mounted internal, those mount's will have to wait until I actually have the wires.
So for the next few days I will be finishing up all those odds and ends. Also, the exhaust headers and extensions came today for the engine so I can also get those welded up and mount the engine to the fuse, which will also let me install all the related components. All related hardware has been ordered and will be a week or two. But there is still plenty to do. I will start posting pics once I get all these little odds and ends done and start something worth showing.

Nothing to show yet, but!!! I do have the cabane parts cut and ready for braising. I also have the exhaust headers ready to be braised to the exhaust outlets. In the morning I will go and get some more "real" silver solder and start braising it all. I will take pics of the process. My build time is still limited because of the new land and house work I'm in the middle of. But, I am still here and at it.

Good to hear your still there. I almost forgot about the mighty pitts. Hope you can get back to the things that you want to do soon. Have you been making any time for the little pitts?

Sad to say, no! The only flying I have been able to get in is with the profile on a patch that is clear on the property. But even that has not been much. It should be slowing down a bit after next weekend. Then it will be only one day a week up there. Hopefully!!!!

Hey Robert, I know how life sometimes gets in the way of the things we'd like to do but, hang in there. I just want to say that I like how your build is coming together and I've picked up on a few things so far. I'm hoping to do the exact same build ( plane and motor ). Except I don't think I have the skills to make it my first build. I called a couple of guys who advertise online but, they won't be able to squeeze me in for another year or more. In the meantime I'm converting the garage into my workshop and hope to improve by then. Once your done with yours let me know if you'd like to do another. Same set up but in an ultracote scheme. For the right price of course.

Thank's squirrely, glad you're enjoying it. As for your kit, I would love to build it free of charge, but shipping it back to you finished is cost prohibitive.

Here is a shot of the cabane tubes with the center (part the bolt goes through) brazed up. Now to bend the tube and make the cut-out for the bolt support. And the other pic is the headers with the extension tubes ready to be brazed together.

The exhaust has been brazed together. The cabane will not be so easy or quick.

Nice work. Are you going to add a smoke system? It would look great in the sky.

A Sullivan skywriter sits in waiting. I ran it on the 55cc Ultimate and it has enough flow to support dual exhaust smoke. So the Pitts will have smoke from hell!! Ohhhh Yeaaa!!

I have compressed the tube for the cabanes, so it is now streamlined.

The skywriter will do the trick. I have mine in a Pilot Edge 540 37%. I'm using the LG switch on/off at 60% rather than mixing it with the throttle. Currently switching out the motors from a DLE 111 to a ZDZ 120. A lot of work involved but it should be a MONSTER when done. I hope to fly it next Saturday. This is where I wished I were more familiar with this site so that I could post pics. I think I could add them to my gallery.

Robert, it sounds like you have all the tools needed for the build. I've never really been a tool guy. Always bought them only when needed. And now I need them. Added pics in my gallery of the new motor install for my Pilot Edge 37%.

The thing I don't like the most about buying tools is that some are expensive and then I rarely use them. My table saw was for crown molding, used it 4 years ago. Sander, used it on the window seals; Also 4 years ago. And the list goes on. The moment you sell them you need it. Drives me nuts sometimes.

Robert, what brazing rod do you use and where do you get it from? Nice to see something happening on here again.
