Ace, that is looking nice... I'm waiting to see it fully assembled with the wings on... its going to be a "Mini-Me" for sure... if you don't know what I mean by mini-me, just watch the Austin Powers movies lol... "a smaller cone of oneself "

Well, actually not a true mini me. The real one is no longer with us. So! It's just a mini. Finished all the yard work and now waiting for someone to come home that can hold the fuse whilst I install the wheels and pants.

I am at a crossroads of a dilemma, sorta. I don't know whether I want to run the straight pipes and deal with the noise or put on the muffler and have none, other than the prop that is.
Any opinions?

I suppose that depends upon where you fly. Personally I love loud motors, two-stroke especially. But then I'm going deaf (cars, boats, motorcycles, drums, etc). What are the requirements for Top Gun?

No restrictions at TG or my field.

In which case, loud pipes save lives. Wait, that doesn't quite apply here.

Well, depending on orientation, it could. All I know is from watching this engine on you tube, as well as running it on the stand, it is quite loud. As it currently stands I will install the muffler I built but I may, at a later time, cut it open and shorten the silencers a bit. I would like to have a little sound and it may surprise me once in flight, we'll see.

I, personally, would love to hear that thing roaring. Such a great sounding engine.

By the way, the wheels and pants went on today. I also spent a fair amount of time cleaning the paint off the hinges, not hard just slightly time consuming.

I would go with whatever duplicates the real airplane. Full scale aircraft are LOUD. Lots of the noise comes from the prop too. Whenever I fly a big airplane at a show wether it be a full scale or model show I always slightly under prop so I get lots of crowd appealing noise. When it comes time to compete I put on a quieter prop as we get scored on sound.

Speedracer, can you elaborate on the "scored on sound" part of your comment. I`ve never competed in any form of R/C, I think I have a pretty good idea of what your talking about, just would like some conformation, just curious.??
I`m guessing, it is how "scale" the plane sounds,...keeping in mind ..relative to it`s size.???

I went to Frank's site to look at the dates for TG 2015, which aren't up yet. And decided to have a look at the rulebook, found this on page 2:

8. All engines, except turbines, ducted fans, diesels and 4 strokes, must use mufflers.

I could be wrong, but I think you loose points too for prop rip. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Don't know, but mine at 4200rpm is not going to be making much noise with the prop.

Ace did you see the video link I posted over on the other board, from Toni Clark's web site... same pitts ( I believe), same engine... if I understand prop rip correctly, there was some nice sounding rips in that video... not to mention how realistic that whole setup is, and the skill of the pilot flying it... I have trouble flying a plane toward myself, let alone tossing it around like that at 50 feet off the ground.

I don't see how it can be avoided with an aerobatic aircraft such as the pitts... they should actually mark you down in points if you don't cause prop rips.. means your not pushing it hard enough !!

"Mine is a four stroke...."

Oh, somehow I missed that.
And here I thought I had been paying such close attention.

Robert, I take it the Pitts in the video is muffled ? I think I could hear the Prop Rip. I thought that plane sounded fabulous.

Ok, so the one on Toni Clarks link is shown as a 57% 120" wing span.

Well I like the sound in your video link as well, plenty of prop rip there... maybe let a little more of the 4stroke sound come through... its hard to tell from a video... incredible performance from that engine though.

That is what I am thinking mine will be like with my muffler. I can increase the volume of the sound if not loud enough.

John M,
I don't know which one in particular you are referring to but in my opinion all of them are too loud. If I had to guess all but one are running canisters, and the one is a muffler.
