Spitfire wing fillets
Hi there scale fans
I have a certain Spitfire ARF that I plan to do scale details and paint job. As I was measuring and marking the panel lines to lay chart tape, I realised how far off-scale this model is ...
Anyway, one part I would like to fix is make proper wide wing fillets that make a Spitfire unique. The wing chord at root is 41 cm, so about 1/5 scale.
I contacted Dave Platt that has a 1/5 Spitfire, but wouldn't sell the fillets separate from the short kit.
Any other sources of pre-formed fiberglass or plastic fillets?
If I end up building them, which method would you recommend? I have seen several threads using balsa, micro baloons, micro lite putty etc. but that was done on glassed wood fuses, mine is balsa covered with printed film covering.
Thanks for any tips
Nick

RE: Spitfire wing fillets
I believe the old Pica 1/5 scale kit came with vacuum formed fillets. Maybe somebody out there still has an unused pair sitting on the shelf? Might be worth putting up a "wanted" add in the classifieds.

RE: Spitfire wing fillets
you might try this
protect the fuse first blue tape works well or even cellophane just so your project is protected, and build up a form in the shape you want the fillet to represent, potting foam works well and sands easy, but any filling material like plaster of Paris weight is not a issue since the form will be discarded after its used, just something available to build up the basic shape you want when satisfied with the shape, coat the form with car wax polish so the part your making will release.
once the form is built up then use epoxy resin, or poly resin whatever you have available and fiberglass to make your fillet, when dry you can pop it off the form and there is your scale fillet you may need to build up a light ply saddle to extend into the wing to support the fillet that contacts the wing.
