Now that's funny!

.....by the way, I'm not out of the woods yet - one of the hinge bearings somehow got out of round and is binding a bit on the rudder post.

CRAP! NOW I GOTTA MAKE ANOTHER ONE! (that might take another two weeks at my pace - yikes!)

looks like the seas just got a little bit rougher

Jack, that'll work! Is that a gentle way to say "redo it" ?

Like Steve says - a BFH.

OK, consider it done

Doug, the color scheme is going to be Victor Chapman's plane as done on the Rhinebeck reproduction.

Q's.....

It looks like regular solder, not solder with a percent of silver? (silver solder) I don't know how the 2-straps on the rudder hinge will hook up, but I would think there would be some verticle forces on the rudder.
Would the solder joint give way???
I had used regular solder on 4-point gear for Piper cub on floats, and it held well, until a unexpected engine out hard landing, pulled 1-of the 4-joints out...
Perhaps brass will hold better, I used steel piano rod.

I don't want to claim it will NOT hold..... Just wondering what your thoughts on this...

I hear what you are saying..........and there was considerable head scratching on this. I think the flight loads imposed on the rudder will be of a horizontal or pulling direction and not vertical. If the plane flips over on landing and ends up on the rudder, well maybe then its a problem........but probably wood will be breaking before the solder joint fails.......that's my take on it.

The pictures I couldn't post earlier.

This is the intended way to attach the rudder.........drill through the brass straps.........drill thru the fuse.......insert short section of dowel rod........drill thru dowel rod.......insert brass bushing into dowel......then bolt rudder to fuse.

Easier said than done...........still in the development stage.

I need to tidy up the design so that the hinges are free and the rudder is still attached firmly.

If it doesn't work out or seems like it is taking way too long (which it has already) I might just use 6 or 7 large Robart hinge points and hope that it actually will fit into the van when it is finally finished.
