There were quite a few incomplete/unfinished full size BD kits floating around some years back. I always wondered what happened to them.

I think those kits were unfinished because of missing parts-as I understand it

99% of all original Bd-5 kits as shipped were missing 50-80% of the parts to have a flying airplane. None of them recevied a drive system. Very few had the items for the fuel system and control linkages. 50-60% of them never received landing gear castings.

I have owned 5 full scale Bd-5's (currently searching for #6). Out of those five only one had 90% of the parts necessary to complete it (everything but an engine and instruments/avionics). The onky reason it was that complete is because all of the missing parts were purchased from a 3rd party vendor.

Unfortunately, the steel hydroform stamping dies for all of the BD-5 panels were destroyed in the late 70's, early 80's because Bede went bankrupt. So unless someone ponies up the $$$$ to have new dies made (or does an all composite version), the BD5's that are out there are all that will ever be left.

Thay would be cool. Slightly lower thrust line would be nice as well. The full scale has about -3* and if your doing a highspeed taxi and reduce the throttle to fast it will actually cause the airplane to totate and become airborn.

Default BD-variant

I like the idea of a lower thrust line--you know some one did that -check it out--someone also did a V tail---It ain't bad!!

Originally the Bd5 was supposed to be tube steel fuse with a fiberglass aerodynamic shell and V tail... Flight characteristics were pretty bad from dutch roll though.

I generally like V tail but it doesn't look right on the BD-I did read about the steel sub frame and glass fuse

I've always thought it would be cool to do a 1:1 scale RC version.....

Problem would be a large enough turbine---maybe a jetcat 300-would do it justice

The fullscale only had 250lbs of thrust initially. Newer models are upat 300-350lbs. The airplane's grows weight is around 600-750lbs, but has been taken as high as 1000lbs.

Doing a 1:1 RC would be fairly simple as you could eliminate about 80% of the materials involved, the problem comes down to the 80-100 pounds of ballast needed in the nose for CG purposes.

I could build it at 80 - 100lbs--P-300 I heard is around 66lbs thrust--might just work

The bare aluminum fuse, vertical tail and horizontal stab is only around 35-40 pounds.

The main spar and landing gear is about 50.

Bill Hemple makes a 50% BD-5 kit. I believe it is available right here in the US.

Ya know -I just don't remember what mine weighed-Can't wait to see what the upgraded one comes in at. The existing fuel tank holds 5 liter-think that will stay

I just acquired a BD5 arf fiberglass fues and built up wings with electric retracts. Beautiful job. No instructions nor do I know who made it. It most probably came from Hobbyking.
Willing to sell.

What is the wing span of your BD-5? It is probably an ARF made by Windrider and sold by Hobbyking. How much do want for it?

How about posting a picture and some size specs. I believe Blackhorse models did a glass Prop and EDF version around 57in span.
