rebuilt sig liberty sport flying weight conern
I am all done rebuilding a sig liberty sport a friend gave me.i recovered it using coverite fabric.actually the top wing was already done and needed to be painted.i also painted the tail as shown on the plans.i installed an os 91 fs that wasnt being used.nowhere on the plans is any there any note regarding flying weight.i just weighed mine and its just about 8 pounds rtf. The fuel tank will add about 10 ounces .is this plane going to fly or do I need to hang it up and forget about it. I am frustrated thinking I did all this scale work and made it to darn heavy.

The information I can find online says the Sig Liberty Sport biplane has a 57" wingspan. That's about the same as my SE5a. And 8 pounds (about 3.6kg) is also about the same as my SE5a. I have had no problems flying my SE5a with a Saito 56.
(Besides, I would never ever just "hang a model up" rather than try to fly it.)

Hope your doing well over there.nooooooo that was my frustration venting.it just seemed 8 pounds is a wee bit heavy.i also had an se5 a and no offense I want my liberty sport to fly a bit more agrressively.its not 3d or whatever but I want it to move pretty good.what prop are you using a prop with more pitch say a 5 or more rpms at say 7 or 8.

Your weight is fine. Those models will fly great at up to 10 pounds on a .70 FS. A .91 FS and 8 lbs should be a perfect combination. If it is straight and balanced for flight you will be in for a very pleasant surprise at how well it preforms.

One last thought.what kind of prop do you lean towards when its heavier.i have a 14x6 apc.do you go to a 15 with 9 or 10 pitch or stay with a 14 and higher pitch say 7 or 8.

I'd start with the "standard" prop for the maiden. Then, after you get the feel for it, you can experiment with other props. And I know what you mean when you say that the model just "feels" heavy. I mean 8 pounds is the same weight as a newborn!

Just FYI: Kenny Kear out in Mesa AZ, the guy who makes the great trophies for the one eighth air force fly ins, had an 8 pound sig liberty sport he flew in competition using a ST .51 swinging a 12x5 prop. Very scale and flew great at 8 pounds. His father had built a full scale liberty sport so Ken had the best access to documentation a modeler could ask for. One thing I am certain about was that he said the CG on the plans was not to his liking and he added an additional 6 oz. of weight to the nose to tame it down a bit and make it less pitch sensative. He also said that to look for thrust not torque and that when he switched to the 12x5 prop takes offs were much easier with less tendency to swap ends.Take this comment for what it is worth.

Jack its sounding better.i have heard on some posts the cg is not entirely correct.the formula is about 25 percentof the wing area .as prop it sounds like he was sayingthe 12x5 would be preffered over a 12x6..I will consider both comments seriously.
