They looked close and realized how many wires there actually were and they changed their minds!

2009 was the last year we had "Review of The Threes". 1/3 scale took the foothold and became the common size, so show casing them was redundant.
But , a little incentive and hope for warm weather.

Fred Jungclaus had an idea for the 2011 Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous. He wanted a German Observation Balloon to accompany our scale WW1 planes. He designed the scale balloon, and he and his wife sewed it together. The big balloon was complete with an observation basket hanging below. Fred designed the balloon to be lifted by a few hundred red and yellow helium filled party balloons. Held inside by the fabric and lacing. His idea was to have a release on top, that would allow the red and yellow balloons to spill out looking like the OB was on fire. This was to happen after several of our 1/4 scale models made strafing runs on the OB. Remember this was a prototype. All did not go as planned. The wind seemed to drive the balloon to the ground. But it did manage to stay aloft for quite a few strafing passes by several RC models. But, the lacing release that was to let the fire out, didn't work, and with all the pulling and jerking , the big OB broke loose and took off. It serenely floated over downtown Dayton, unscratched.

This is the long overdue video of that event. Taken directly from the camera, no editing.

Keep 'em comin' Steve! Good stuff.

The early morning flights are absolutely the best! The last couple of flights before dark are equally good, too.

This design plane is very cool. A friend sold one years ago that I wish I had bought. It was nowhere near as big... but it looked just as cool in the sky. Great looking plane and it needs some video took from the cockpit !!! hint hint.. I wish one of your gang over in the Indiana Ohio area was taking high def on board footage for the rest of us !

The thing you can't tell is that it was underpowered and the stab incidence was wrong so I was holding back pressure the whole flight to keep it in the air. The takeoff sure looked realistic, though! I've since fixed the stab issue and put a more powerful engine in it and it's much better. I also put some fin offset in too because it kept wanting to roll and turn to the right. It's a pusher so it needed lots of left trim.

tried it, but onboard video tends to be shots of a lot of air, or of 1 particular part of the plane doing nothing, or a control surface. One thing , video of a control surface during flight shows you how little the surface actually moves while in flight. Maybe this summer at some of the events.

You have to reposition the camera every flight.. and get as many people at as you can to mix and match it..

Andy,
That looks amazing!
How big is that wing span?
Are you bringing that down to Joe Nall?
I really would like to see it fly at Nall but with soo many planes... would make me nervous.......save it for ODP and HDP!

We have a hell of a lot of people coming down with us this year....we need to get Jim and Jeff down this year!
Send him a PM ....he doesn't listen to me anymore

Don't think I'll bring it to Joe Nall, but I should have it at the more Dawn Patrol oriented events (assuming all goes well with the test flight).
So who's in your J. Nall entourage?

Jeff and I were planning to go to J. Nall but now his job won't let him, and I don't feel like driving all that way by myself.

That's fantastic, Andy. Are you bringing it to the Ohio Dawn Patrol? I'm going to bring the DH-2. It would be so cool to get them in air at the same time.

Jim, it takes up a lot of room even apart! But I agree it would be neat to see both of them in the air at the same time............I'll see what I can do!

Tripe is all put back together, only thing left to do is paint the cowl and blast the whole plane with clear, that is if it stops snowing. The only good thing about weather like this is my beer does not require refrigeration.
