We flew the plane at the first time without the spinner and the exhaust dummies to get enough air on the engines to cool them down - also the main gear doors and the tail retract was not functional on this flight!

The power setting in flight was about at 60% - next time we will fly full throttle!

For those that may not have heard the news, Precious Metal was badly damaged due to an engine fire while refueling on the way here for the Reno air races. According to the aircraft owner, this may be the end of her racing career. No one was injured, but the aircraft sustained severe damage. This is a shame, as she was about 2-3 years away from being a contender for unlimited gold. Let us hope she will race again.

The news of the death of the real Precious Metal might be premature.

http://www.airraceteam.com/
https://www.facebook.com/Precious-Me...3368/timeline/

Apparently, she's repairable and not quite as bad as they first thought. They have set up crowdfunding to get her flying again.

"We will give you one square inch on Precious Metal for a donation of $50 towards our rebuild. We will fly your picture around the course embedded in our new paint scheme and you can be part of resurrecting one of the most iconic race planes is history.

Team Precious Metal will be in Reno this year. We will have our pit and sell our team gear. Chances are we'll provide some evening entertainment as well. Come see us there and purchase your squares!

There are several ways to support our cause: through our Precious Metal gear sales, our newly invented onboard picture program, or by supporting our sponsors and purchasing their products.

There's no limit as to how many square inches you can purchase, we'll just make your picture larger! Or submit pictures of friends, family, pets or whatever you desire. Precious Metal is the people's racer. And with your support she will growl around the course again!

That is good news indeed. I was in the unlimited pit Thursday and did not see them, but I arrived late due to work obligations. I will be there all weekend, and my picture will be on the plane.
Thank you for the update.

I think it looks worse on the inside, under the cowl and inside wing center section. There was concern that the heat could have damaged the main spar.
