Hi Art,
I am enjoying the build. At 1st glance the Stinson looks like a simple design but it isn't. I get a headache just thinking about a few of the items I am going to have to tackle. I keep thinking about building your 1/3 N-11 that I got the plans from you for but I keep seeing other planes I must have.

I did get one door cut out, will flip it around and work the other side. Will take a break in a little bit an watch the Xifinity series Daytona race.
BTW: Still freakin snowing here.

I think you have me confused. Wendell Hostetler designed this plane and I bought the plans from him.

The doors and the windows are now cut out. It is looking more like a Monocoupe 90 than a Stinson.

Good idea on going with larger landing gear fasteners. You did a really good job cutting out those doors, what did you use? Easy job if panels were unassembled and flat, but much more difficult to cut them out as you did. Making good progress Anthony!

My shop has been packed just for a few days and I'm already getting the shakes...I need my fix!

Great Job on the cutouts. They look laser cut without the singe.

I used a Dremel tool with an 1/8" cutter to cut out the radius at the bottom of the door. For the straight cuts I used a 1/4" die grinder with a 3" x .035 thick cut-off wheel. I did clean up the edges with a sanding bar when finished. The door openings are still just a hair undersized and I will have to sand them to size.

My wife is going to make a trip to the craft store this week and pick up supplies for making the interior panels, seats, headliner and carpet.

I have figured out the problem around the headliner and the wing mounting bolts. The only way to safely secure the wings is to bolt thru the spar box, spar and fuse formers ( the 2 pieces epoxied to the top of the cabin). I will make a removable headliner that will be secure by Velcro or magnets. It will just fold in half to fit thru the open door then attach to the roof of the cabin. It will only be used when displaying the plane anyways.

As usual, excellent Anthony, but then we wouldn't expect anything less.

You guys bring up a little concern with the landing gear attachment on my Nosen Mr. mulligan. I used the recommended 6-32 hardware. I have a total of 12 SHCS with T nuts. I'm not sure what the flying weight will be, but I'm sure 20+. Thoughts or feelings? Should I just swap em now with something bigger? Now or later will be the same as I made a removeable hatch to access the LG hardware. Thanks for any advice given.

Hi Steve,
with 12 of them you should be OK and it looks like your gear is one piece? If so then definitely OK. My gear legs are in 2 pieces and I have 4 screws per leg. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.
Later!!

Well, this is my biggest plane yet. So, none of it is really comfortable yet. Lol. I thought it was good but second opinions are always better. Thanks Anthony.

Well I am switching gears again, it may seem like I have the attention span of a 3 month old crack baby.

I have the fuse to the point to where I can start work on the interior bits. I am going back to work on the right wing and get it caught up to the left wing. After all I will need to wings to finish off the spar box installation. I am also going to look into installing a removable hatch in the bottom of the fuse just behind the firewall to allow access to the fuel tank. With a finished interior it will be all but impossible to access the fuel tank for service thru the cabin. This will require a bit of engineering to keep from weakening the structure. I will ponder this while I work on the wing.

Later!!

I have the Sub L/E installed and the T/E is installed on the right wing. I will get the L/E sanded down to accept the sheeting.

I finally remembered to e-mail Frank Ryder at Trade-A-Plane to ask about the paint colors. He was nice enough to respond back and said he would pull the paperwork on the plane and get the paint information for me and get back to me in a couple of days. Very nice of him to do that for me. Will make matching the paint colors a lot easier.

Taking a break to watch the Daytona 500, Go Dale JR. Bummer for all the Kyle Busch fans, he broke his right leg and left foot in the Xfinity race last night and will miss the Daytona 500 and probably the next 6 or so races.

Later!!

Yeah I here ya,
Been a long week with work, long days. I did receive the tail gear and it looks like it will work just fine.

I will get back to work on the Stinson tomorrow. I also have to dig out my table saw to cut 1/4" acrylic sheets for the wife to make the mold boxes for the 1/3 scale full body pilot molds. The pilot is finally ready to pull a mold and cast the 1st pilot. The wife totally switched gears on me and sanded the clothes off the sculpture and plans on casting the pilots without clothes and sewing clothes for the pilots. I think this was a mistake as she does not realize how much work it will be to sew 1/3 scale clothes. We shall see.

Later!!

I would say Anal is being polite.
She is a bit OCD about some things. I have watched her re-arrange the furniture at least a dozen times over the years and she always moves it back within 6 hrs. Now I just chuckle when I see her starting to rearrange the furniture.

Now on the other hand she does take interest in my models and helps when needed. A good extra pair of hands and she helps with the interior work. Now if I could just get her to sand the airframes for me.

I had to have the wife read that, it is almost word for word, us! I have said many times "If I ever went blind she would kill me".

Just a little break from the build,

I had to put new tires, belts and deck wheels on my eXmark zero turn mower. I have also been getting quotes on getting a garage built. If all goes well construction will begin in a couple of weeks. The wife and I will be finishing off the inside of the garage (electric, insulation and drywall etc: )

Between that and flying weather finally getting here the Stinson will have to wait until later this year.
Later!!

Default Hostettler Stinson

Anthony,
Tom Crump and Glen McIntosh came up with a slick way of securing the wing to the fuselage, I swiped it and used it on my 1/5 top flite build. Drill a hole in a block of hard wood then cut to block in two pieces diagonally.
glue the pieces across from each other against the root rib of the wing and inside the fuselage. The bolts go through at an angle from the outside bottom of the wing. This lets you assemble the plane and not have to put your hands
inside the cockpit. It is all done from the outside.

Thanks for the tip Jim,
I believe Merlin Graves came up with that one. He built some incredible planes. I will look into that when I get back to the build.
Thanks!!

I got the idea from Nigel Tarvin, but Merlin may be using it, too.

It does make a good way to secure the wings.
