I know bob Karlson and Ive seen his Wild Cat when it was new and competing. It's a fine model to be sure.
Is it the "best ever? I don't think there's such a thing..

I own a set of gear almost like yours but mine are all tube made and more scale like. I decided years ago not to build the plane.

I saw Bob Karlson compete with the original in scale at the Sequin TX NATS. Since then I have seen three others built from his plans and successfully flown along with two of the Classic Glass kits.

If you want to see "rare" RC models, visit the AMA museum in Muncie. Rare is Tom Brett's Perigee, Kazmirski's Orion and Taurus. Those are "rare" RC models. Just my 2 cents.

The Wildcat is available from Jerry Bates plans, I'm sure a short kit is available from a number of sources, and the main and tail gear are still cataloged by Robart. The gear are built on order so there is a 12 to 16 week lead time. The price is steep but not surprising for a "custom' gear for intensive purposes. I would say its a rare airplane, it comes down to is the popularity of the Wildcat with builders. The Corsair dominates in WWII Naval air fans.

U2fast, please tell me about the devastator. I have a set of plans and am looking forward to getting started but I have never seen a completed model.
There are many flying and non-flying examples of the full scale Wildcat (we have 4 in the museum here in Pensacola). There are, however, no examples above water of the Devastator anywhere in the world. It is a historically important aircraft that is underrepresented in out hobby.

Love your F4F!!!

Rare, how about a glass 78" W/S B-17 made by Mey's Hi Tech models. That's rare. Searched for months for info, with not a single hit.

Wagon1, the devastator was built in the early 90's by bob noser. His friend don Williams drew up plans on brown paper. The span is a little over 100". This model is skinned in 1/64 ply one panel at a time. It's just pure artwork. Model flew quite a bit back in the day. I have updated the model. We plan on flying her in team scale at the scalemasters.

Bob's Wildcat was, in it's day, a groundbreaking model. Large scale and a rarely modeled subject with scale-ish functioning retracts. The article was published in Model Airplane News and the plans are still available from them, as are the retract plans.

http://www.airagestore.com/grumman-w...ar-x03832.html

One of the more prolific builders in our club built and flew this plane in the early 2000's, it flew well but was short lived. He like to re-use bits from his and other people's crashed airplanes....

BTW, Bob's wildcat is only 76" wingspan, might want to break out a tape measure.

The builder of this one i beileve extended the wings to 78 or 79 in order for it to be allowed to fly at the events like warbirds over delaware which requires an 80inch wingspan ( close enough ) but you are 100% correct! Bobs was definnitley 76 inches

Now I do know a rare kit (I wish I still had a picture. I bought back in the mid 70s and haven't been able to find one like it or find a listing on it. It was a Jack Stafford standoff scale P-51D. It had foam core wings and I built it with Goldberg main retracts and a Robart retractable tail wheel. Anyone here remember it?

I seem to recall that Bob built and competed with a larger Wildcat many years after he introduced the 76" span version. Anybody else remember this or am I just going crazy?

Yeah I'm thinking that my collection is more like 1/5 .5 scale because the yellow P 40 is 86 inches my CMP zero is 82 inches so they are correct for each other just smaller than 1/5. So which kids would be the 82 inch model? That's probably the one I should get

Is that the pilot Thomas? From the shape the wing looks like it belongs to a warbird probably a P-51 Mustang.
