Bi-Plane: Stearling 1/6 Scale Stearman PT-17
Hi guys,
I recently got a good deal on this old kit. I have always liked the Stearman and about a year ago got a chance to fly in the real one. It's a very stable plane to say the least. I also got a nice YS-.91 FS with the idea to use it in the Stearman. IT'S WAY TOO BIG! To use this engine I'd have to cut into the firewall, and the plastic dummy radial included in the kit would be useless. The rear of this engine would have to sit about 1 1/2 inch behind the kit firewall.
My question is this: Does anyone on this forum have any experience with this kit. It was designed at a time when the .61's were the most common engine used in "large models".. This model has a 64 inch span, and I'm thinking the .61 might be a little under powered. I'm really not interested in any comments beyond first hand experience.
TIA.
Joe

I'm converting an old one to electric (copyright from the 60's, early kit with aluminum cowl). Word to the wise: don't build it with the stock wire landing gear... it's way too springy and you'll have terrible ground handling and likely prop strikes when you land and the legs splay out. Robart makes "robo-struts" oleo struts for this kit, but they are pricey, about $200. I modified some $40 Hobbyking oleos and they seem to do the job: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...-project/page6
