Here we go again! I am beginning the build of a new model. This time it is a 1/3 scale DH 2. This is a result of a hair-brained idea hatched by a group of , well, HAIR-BRAINS (what else could it have been?).This took place at the Ohio Dawn Patrol, 2011.

Some one decided that a group build was needed and the subject was to be a DH 2 from quarter scale Alan Morgan plans. Some have opted for the merely quarter scale, where as others have choosen the MANLY third scale version. There is even a monstrous half scale version and a minute version (decided upon before the hair brains took over).

My version is helped along by being massaged/merged with Windsock Datafile drawings on the DH2. This was done by Jim Suchy of recent Gotha bomber fame. The hope is to maintain a scale outline but stay in the quick and dirty sport scale arena. The goal is to have it flying by Ohio Dawn Patrol 2012. That would be the second (I think) weekend of July, 2012. Jim and I actually shook hands and pledged "The DH 2s will be flying by ODP 2012!"
You know, one of those "I will if you will" kind of things.

I plan on using a Zenoah 445 twin with spring starter.

How are you going to connect the tail booms to the wing? A small rod end joint?

I am going to slot the end of the tail booms horizontally, insert a brass or steel tab, cover with a brass tube and pin/bolt the assembly together. I will then insert the tab between the spars and bolt it in place. But you're a little ahead of the game .......right now I have 4 wing panels to build.

No length adjustments on the boom ends? Certainly, some adjustments will be necessary?

I'll make all the adjustments during the set up before I drill the holes to bolt it to the spars and the stab. Its pretty much the same thing as drawing the rear fuse longerons together on a conventional fuse.....you know, measure twice and cut once..........you get one shot at it and darn well hope you did it right!

Hey Art,

We're going to have to decide on what color schemes we're doing so we don't do the same one. ...not that there are that many choices. They are all basically PC-10 on top and natural linen below.

BTW, I came up with a good rendition of PC-10 which I used on the SE5a that Jeff now has. He used it on his Sopwith Triplane and if you recall it looks just right, especially the way he used the satin finsh. We'll have to have him send us swatches so we will have the same color of PC-10.

I'm looking for an easy to do color scheme........maybe green on top and CDL on the bottom....... or maybe a CDL overall......there isn't much in between.....or I might choose a green one!
I'll give it some thought and let you know before I dive in and pick one.

Green?! They were all painted PC-10, which is the WW1 British version of olive drab, except for the all-over CDL ones. The only differences were the fuselage nacelles...some were gray.

Green...brown? Ah...good ol' PC10...you gotta love it ('cause you damn well can't avoid it). Here are two photos of my PC10 painted SE5a taken minutes apart is slightly different lighting conditions. So "what color is it?" By the way, I got this "morphalicious" result by adding red, black, and brown acrylic to Nelson's PC10.

The majority of these were not clear doped linen on both sides, but I've seen some color profiles that show clear doped linen overall, both top side & bottom. I think it's in the book de Havilland DH2 in Action. 5967 and 5994 are shown this way.

I think it would be really cool to model Tidmarsh's DH2 5929. This is the one that got hit in the nose by an anti-aircraft shell, which punctured the nacelle but failed to detonate. He flew it with a big hole in the nose cap. I'm thinking with some creative painting & a little extra sheet metal, one might be able to simulate the puncture without affecting aerodynamics. Or... I could just build one & fly a flag pole through it. I figured I'd jump on that before anyone else did.

That looks just right! I always thought of it as sort of a greenish brown...a little towards the brown.

Art, there's a profile of an all-CDL one on the back cover of the Windsock datafile. Only the top of the nacelle is PC-10.
If you don't have it I can scan it and send it to you.

Also, I found in my profile book that's all CDL.

That's pretty good match, but might be darker. The main thing to remember is that PC10 is basically a dark grayish, olive brown.
