1/3 albatros build advice
I'm ready to either purchase a volgesang JW 1/3 scale albatros or the balsa usa. My question to all those few people that actually may have built one of these planes is to give me advice on difficulty of build and what engine they chose. I'm pretty advanced builder with scratch builds, GTM and balsa usa builds. I want to build if fast under 1 year. BTW if you have one for sale maybe I would be interested.

I think JW kits build much faster than Bals USA's. This is from what a couple of acquaintances who have built both have said. JW has tab and slot construction and BUSA has a lot of sticks. I have seen both JW & BUSA finished models and they both come out really nice and also fly well.

I built the JW Pup. It has similar construction to the Albi. As mentioned its mostly tab construction and light ply wood.
It's not as Scale as the BUSA plane. JW does take a few liberties with the plane. One for example is the lower wing sub wing. The full scale plane has one and flying wires are anchored to it. The JW kit does not have a sub wing attaches the Wires to the fuse side.
Is it a big deal? That depends on your level of expectation.

Thanks for the information. Just want to tell the scale builder community if there is a albatros kit of any kind they have and just gave up on it and want to sell please let me know. I will pay price of kit at time you bought it.

Sooo many years later I'm weighting out the same decision
After all this time. Has there be updates to kits?
Balsa USA is 1/3 is $1900 shipped while the JW kit is $2100 shipped.
Which would you chose?
JW kit dose come with nice thin plywood for better looking wood finish and all metal parts are already welded

Ok well I order the JW 1/3 Albatross kit, and its amazing, Within 3 weeks I was done with all the wings, elevators, rudder and started on the fuse. Wasted 2 days tracing all the ribs and forms to make my own copy incase of accident.
The light skin ply is cut perfectly to shape which makes it great. No regrets
Only issue with the kit, is fiberglass spinner/alummum back plate, I would of prefer all Alummum as these do nose over.

Looks very nice. I built a JW Sopwith pup which is very similar construction, I did a lot to the kit to make it more scale.
My issue with the Albi is that they don't have a sub wing. They just attach the wing to the fuse which is incorrect.
I think Mr JW is a decent designer but he goes for "kinda" scale and not scale. That may or may not be important. All depends on the builder.

Wow this kit looks amazing. I just aske a guy who just built a proctor 1/4 albatros and told me it was the hardest model he ever built and he is no beginner to the hobby. So so you like the ZDZ and how did you get more nose weight? Would you recommend another engine that would not break the bank as far as cost. I usually fly with DA 100 twins so don't know anything else. Thanks

Add nose weight, I 3D printed the dummy motor and added led shot to it.
It was very easy to build. Very enjoyable
