Default 87" Ziroli Stearman Weight

Hi All,

I am finishing my 87" stearman build. I finished it with F&M Stits products. I am at the point where I am doing the final assembly and installing the flying wires, G62, fuel tank Etc.. I weighted the airframe and then all the other stuff that will be bolted on. As best as I can tell it is going to weigh 35 LBS. It has a wing area of 2195 in. Sq.

Is it going to fly like a brick or am I o.k. at 35 LBS.? I have not checked the G.G. yet either. It is possible I will have to add nose or tail weight also.

What do you guys think?
P.S. I had this post on RC scale forum for 3 days with no response????

Might it help if you spelled Ziroli correct?

He lists 35 as the high weight so I bet there are some out there at 40. Should be ok.

Its Okay I've missed spelled a lot of thing myself but I still got the point accross. I'm still in the building stages of mine (about three years so far)and so far the weight of the fuse wings tail and some of the landing gear isn't very much. Everybody here says that after all is said and assembled it should weigh about 30-40bls. I have not settled down on an engine just yet. With a G62 you should be just fine though.

Tff,
Thanks, that makes me feel a bit better about the weight. I think it will be in the ball park. On the plans where it lists the wing area, span, etc., it does not list the weight. I did not think to look on their web sight.

Just make sure that you get the CG rite even if you have to make it a little nose heavey. It will fly much better nose heavey than tail heavey. You can loose a lot of planes if they are tail heavey. Good luck and maybe you could post some Pictures of her if I ever get my camera working I will take some of mine.

Everybody miss spells stuff, when I find I have; or, it is pointed out to me, I generally make an effort to fix it. I'm from the old school and spelling matters to me! If it doesn't to you, well, then I guess that's your gig.

Mode One,
I agree 100% with you about spelling, but I do not know how to change the subject of a post. If I knew how to fix it I would.

Go to the first post you made and hit the edit button, when the document comes up, you will be able to edit the title box, also. I know this works, as I just edited a thread I started that is 5 pages back and the change to the title was updated to the new name.

I know somebody is going to "FLAME" me over this, as people seem to think spelling doesn't matter anymore and will feel I'm a horse's PATOOT for bringing it up! I screw up, we all do! What's amazing to me is we have an international audience here! There are many participants who post, and English is their second, third or fourth language and their spelling is far better than many Americans! If your American and not embarrassed about this, there is something WRONG!!

I see we are all early bird here don't we have anything better to do LOL Forgot to let you guys know that my tailfeathers are built and covered fuse framed up (no landing gear just yet) both wings built and sanded working on ailerons. A friend of mine has one that weighs about 35lbs and the only issue he has is it nosing over during landings and taxing. Learned from him to take and on the lamination of the rudder to put some 32 ply between the laminations for strenth. Other wise the upper portion of the rudder crushes real bad.

Nchrome,
I would like to see some pictures of your Stearman. I will post some pictures of mine when it is completely finished. I hope to display mine at Toledo if I finish it in time.
I see you are from Galesburg IL. Isn't there a Stearman fly in there each year?

Yes there is and one of the Stearmans that come down I am planning on dupicating. It is all black with a silver strip trimmed in read. The engine has a cowel and wheel pants also. The owner also let me take a lot of pictures of his bird sos I hope I do him justice when I duplicate it. Hopefully he will let me pose my plane next to his and then I will post it on this site later this year.

Yes, our grammar is not too good either. For example, YOUR use of 'If your American' when you should have said 'If you're American' in the text above

Stearman's should fly in a slow stately manner. With all that wing area, 35 pounds will still be a floater. Try a large diameter low pitch prop. Stearmans have a short coupled nose so make sure everything of weight it as forward as possible.

Carl - Amen to that. My dively Stearman has 7 lbs. of lead potted into the front of the engine cowl to get it to balance acccording to the plans. The other alternative is an expensive , heavy , multicylinder radial engine.- I'm thinking about it.

Well it's finished. It needed 1.75 lbs of weight in the nose to balance. The total weight is 33.5 Lbs.This isless than I expected. It has not flown yet. I will start anouther post with some pictures.

Geoarrdsog5,
The plans show the C.G. range between 25% and 30%. I balanced mine at the 25% mark. I think these percentages are an average of the top and bottom wing. On the airplane the 25% mark is slightly behind the leading edge of the bottom wing.

Guys....

How in the world are you coming up with these heavy weights of 30 to 35 lbs. for this stearman?? Seems to me so excesive. My 89'' wingspanFlair Stearman weighs in at 26 lbs with a G62 and the plans actually call for the plane to top out at 22 - 24 lbs using a Saito 1.8 fs. What kind of wood are you using? Is there a heavy use of plywood throughout the airframe? I'm just amazed.

Outacontrol, The Dively 1/4 scale Stearman is built like a battleship, it's all aircraft grade plywood and spruce. The Ziroly Stearman is probably not much better as far as weight.- it's just slightly smaller. The Flair Stearman is typical english design, lots of thin ply and balsa. If you own a Flair Stearman, be happy. John R.

Did you install the radial yet?
