Default Top Flite Giant Mustang

Does anyone have any experience with the new top flite giant mustang? If so how does it perform? What kind of engine would you recommend, etc...

I have the P51D built with the US41 engine but I just read a post and the guy thought it was underpowered. Warbirds don't fly like IMAC or sport scale. The larger heavier birds need to be flown gracefully, longer lines. He indicated that it flew eliptical loops which is not good but first flights can be a little off, new engine , cold morning.
That may have been part of the trouble. At this point I agree that more power is probably better and have a 3W I may investigate installing.

Hi Bob,

You should check out the warbirds forum.. there are several who have built the kit and the arf they talk about their engines and the like...

I built the kit and used a Zenoah G-38... probably similar to the US 41.. the plane flew very scale like.. top speed was good but not blistering.. I fly at about 4000 feet here in Utah.. I loved the way mine flew.. later I put an OS BGX 3500 that I had sitting around into her.. the plane took off in about 20 feet as opposed to almost 300 feet before.. ( but then again I like to keep it on the ground longer for that scale like take off roll )

I am currently putting the arf together and am putting a US 41 in it.. I -prefer the more scale like speeds and performance... good luck and have fun !

Bob, I test flew one with a USA 41 on it and it flew OK. I never used the flaps because I did not think there was enough engine to overcome the drag of flaps on an overshoot (once the flaps are down you are landing! the only thing in question is where.). Then a year later I retest flew the plane with a Moki 1.8 and what a difference! A gasser with the same HP of the moki 1.8 (G-62, now the DA-50 is an interesting option, or even the ZDZ .40) would be so big there would be no cowl left on the plane.

Good luck

I'm putting the DA-50 in this TF P-51 as we 'speak'.

Check these photos. Cowl by Stan's.

IGN box soft-mounted to firewall. Solid oak engine extention.

More photos on request.

By the way, this is my TF Giant Corsair with the US 41.

I may put a bigger engine in it, but not because it needs it too terribly. It flies really well with the US41 and an 18-10 prop. Weighs 26.5 pounds wet. No joke.

Here's a shot of the P-51 earlier in the build with the US-41 installed. Note how small the extrusion is outside the cowl.

The Da-50 made the hole bigger, but only sticks out about 3/8 to 1/2". I literally bolted it to the same Great Planes soft mount that the US 41 was on.

Hope this helps.

greg

PS The gear doors are driving me bonkers, but will be worth it.

Sagacity,

I am building the giant scale p-51 ARF and noticed your picture with what looks like an aftermarket muffler for the US 41. I would love to know which muffler you are using in your installation.

Thanks

Did I run the 41 with the stock muff? No.

Did not fit to the firewall when I built the Corsair, so my reason for even looking for the replacement was for clearance. Got all caught up in a conversation with Bill on the phone, and next thing you know, I'm stylin'!

I am finishing one with a Moki 2.10 installed. (4.5 to 5 HP)
The complete engine and muffler (PICA) fit entirely inside the cowling (my reason for the engine choice).

The engine will be thirsty (2 oz./min), but full throttle will not be needed all the time.
It will NOT be my everyday flyer, so the fuel consumption isn't that much of a consideration.
Anyway ... Fuel cost is not my biggest yearly cost for this pastime. [X(]

Well I'm planning on using a 3W 42 in mine and possibly a scale exhaust. I hope I can get by without having to cut much of the cowel except for the scale exhaust. Mines the ARC version cause the Big Beautiful Doll has been done to death. Besided that variety is the spice of life and I plan on doing Moonbeam McSwine. A much better looking P-51 than the other.

Say SAGACITY how about a side profile shot of the engine with the cowl on .I've been thinking
about puting a revo-52 or a DA-50 in my mustang so ,Can we see a side shot?I would like to see how much sticks out.
plus how has the gear doors been a problem? Like to know because I plan to do the same on mine. Also did your kit come with the b-model extra stuff? and if so have you thought of getting rid of it?I want to make mine a b-model.
Thanks
Joe

Mine is finished out with flite-metal and a moki 2.1. I have only done engine break in and taxing but it seems to have plenty of power to get off the ground. Mine weighs in balanced at 24.5 lbs. Full cockpit and sequencing doors. I made a lot of deviations in the kit to be closer to scale. Jim

I am busy building one which I plan to have more detail. Power will be Moki 2.10 (I fly at 5100' in Pretoria, South Africa)
I got a couple of useful scale extras from Aerotech Models, namely Full Resin Cockpit Kit, Scale Exhaust Stacks, Static Prop, Inner Gear Doors, Drop Tanks with wing attachment points, 5" Aluminium wheels and Pilot, Fuel Filling Points and a couple of vac-formed scoops and fences. Check out www.aerotechmodels.com
Do NOT purchase their Spinner as it is 5½" and not the required 5".
I would like some input if anyone has put on tailwheel doors - How was this done and was it worth it? - These bits always seemed to get damaged and I am contemplating leaving them off as well as the Inner Gear Doors.

The biggest modifications are to the overall shape of the plane. I enlarged a 3 view and then downsized my kit plans and layed one out over the other. Basically, the engine is moved up about a 1/2 inch and then you have to rebuild the lower cowl to have a good fit. The kit plans has the motor too far down on the firewall. The wing tips and the thickness of the wing are also deviations from true scale as well as the enlarged horizontal stab. Finally, the other big change is when making a full cockpit the instrument housing needs to be totally rebuilt and a lot of fuselage removal for the back half of the cockpit so that you can move the seat back to the correct position. Inner gear doors need to be moved closer to center line. That's just a few of the major changes. I think under war planes forum you can find some long threads on building this kit and changes that were made. Good luck. Oh, yes, mine has tail gear doors. They are pulled in with kevlar thread and pushed fully open with plywood glued extensions glued to the inner doors. Piano hinges hold the doors on. Once they were loosened up and the correct thread length, they don't create a lot of drag on the tail wheel retraction. Just curious to the builder that bought all the expensive scale aerotech accessories and why you wouldn't go ahead and install full gear doors? Jim

I put a G45 in mine and it flies fast. I also cut the cowl and permanently mounted the top half because I didn't want a seam going over the top of the nose. A prop extension from B&B was put on the engine so that it could be moved back and I wouldn't have to cut away so much of the cowl. I added a "cheater" hole in the bottom of the nose to aid in cooling. You can't see it at all from the side.

The plane flies beautifully and flies like a pattern plane. Landings are easier than I thought they would be. Weight is 22+ lbs.
