Thought you'd like to see the tail skid, functions like the full size one.

Hot rod Todd, will the magnet from the speaker effect the servo motor being that close to each other and where did you find the corrugated plastic for the radiator. Nice work !

I doubt that the magnet will bother the servos, but I will test them and shield them if neccessary. My local hobby shop has plastic made for making scale buildings for train sets. One of the plastics looked about right, and worked well.

Hello,

I am thinking about building the Albatross DIII. I have build about 15 kits and I would like to know approximately how long it takes to get to ARC assuming I work about 5 hours daily.

Thank you. Dai Phan

Dai Phan, I just got done building the plane, but I don't really know how much time was spent. It goes together fairly easily, so I would guess that you could get to the ARC step in 5 or 6 five hour days. In my case, there was much more work to be done after that. ARC is not near halfway to complete.

HRT,

Your plane LOOKS AWESOME !!!! I am a WWI fan and I have a nice fleet of WWI birds. The Albatross is one that I love so I think I probably will order one. Have you flown it yet? I have posted a thread on my O-1 Bird Dog so you may want to take a look. It is on ARF forum.

I won't be flying it until spring (below zero in Iowa right now). I'm getting the radio equipment and electronics stuffed into the plane now. Here's a photo showing the general paint scheme. It is a plane passed from Manfred to Lothar Richthofen, early 1917. I still have some details to put in yet, but I have all winter to do it.

Todd,

Your Albatross looks fantastic! You have come along ways since the last build session in December. Can't wait to see it fly this spring.

Hey Hot Rod-meant to ask- what type of hinges did you use on your Alba-I used robart 3/16" installed at an angle from the top-they seem to stick up slightly and show more than yours-maybe I did not get them recessed enough. Nice job on your albatross. Also mine came out tail heavy-had to add about 1# of lead under cowl to balance. Flipstart

I used the white dubro pinned hinges and glued them in with Gorilla Glue. Seems like they will work fine. I don't think this plane will put too much stress on the hinges, so I was looking for something that would look good. As I was building the plane, I knew I would be needing to get the CG up front. The Receiver battery is on the firewall, and the two 9V batteries that power the machine gun sound and light are under the forward landing gear cover. It looks like I made still need to add some weight for the maiden. I hope I don't need much, since the electronics, speaker, and batteries for the sound system weigh almost a pound. Still some details to add, but here is a photo of the plane on my dining room table.

For anyone building this plane, I thought I'd post some graphics I have found through research. There are two albatros logos as found on the rudder of DIII's as they came from the factory. I'm not sure if the logo was color or just black, so I posted both that I have found. Also there is a Garuda prop logo, which should be fairly accurate if printed on white decal paper and cut out. Fourth photo is a view of my scale radiator, mounted in the center as it would be on early model DIII's.

Hot Rod-that really is a nice lookin' Albatros-nice job-I have redundant battery power with 2 batteries up next to the firewall and still had to add a little over 1# of lead to mine to balance. If it flys ok-may try the machine gun sound system if you think it works ok-can you hear it from the air. flip

Man oh man does that look nice! I'm thinking of doing a Pfalz DIIIa as a serious scale project and this Funaero DIII might make an excellent "practice plane." Expecially since I don't have much experience with RC model construction. Thanks also for the graphics. They'll come in handy on future projects.

To answer a couple of questions: The plane is about 1:6 scale, comes out to about 1:5.5 by wingspan. I used a 1:5 scale pilot and he looks fine. I'm not sure if the machine guns will be able to be heard in flight. I made them as loud as I could with a small amplifier and two 9V batteries. Judging by how loud it is, I'd say it will be audible if the engine is cut on a flyby. I finally finished the plane last night. Here are a couple photos showing some details. I made the shell routers for the guns out of plastic sheet, the vents on the side of the fuse are made using small pieces of plastic and aluminum tape. The prop shown is for static only. I made the appearance of lamination using a brown and orange sharpie.

Hot Rod, that is super-duper impressive. You DIII looks stunning and I love the trick with the sharpies. Could you provide a close up of the prop? I can hardly wait to see the in-flight shots (get someone who really knows his way around a camera -- ideally someone with a DSLR and a long AF lens -- to take the photos.

You can see it behind and to the left of the pilots right elbow, in the third pic of post 117. If you're asking about the scale exhaust, it's in the second pic. In post 119, it's just to the right of the prop.

Nice work Todd. Very nice plane and pictures.

Jharkin, thanks for a very interesting thread. Keep up the good work.

I used a flex pipe to run it out under the plane. If you look at the post above, you'll see the exaust sticking out righ behind Manfred.

Since I had nice enough weather to take some outdoor photos, I thought I'd post a couple. You can see some of the scale detail better in these, including the faux wood grain.
