RP, the Gary Allen system for installing the L/G wing is really quite nice, and I think it could be easily retrofitted to your gear. There are pictures of it in the RCSB thread I posted the link to above.

Thanks Fwman, but I actually built my axel wing at the same time I did the gear. The reason my DR1 has the wing removed is it has esentially been destroyd by glow fuel getting on it. The DR1 has a gasser ready to be installed to replace the glow engine but I have not gotten around to doing it yet. I may go back and do a little more detailing to the DR1 after that as it does not have any interior details.
So Fwman, were you at the Warbirds over the rockies this last year? The Chatfield flying site has been a favorite of mine as long as I have been flying. I want to try to make it this year and I will have both my DVII and DR1 there. I flew at the one 2 years agand had a good time. We organized an all WW1 flight and it was pretty cool. My DR1 even made it on the video.

Thanks Guys for the photos, they are great! I think I can make the landing gear set up, I 'll have some question when I get to that stage. But I now have a good direction to go. Both you and Roger have beautifully detailed cockpits and dumby engines. Are they made from kits or did you use BUSA kit parts? I would to do the same. In the past I am more of a stand off scale kind of a guy, I don't have the patience and skills, but admire the work of others who do. This airplane needs to be detailed as much as possible and I think I would like to try.

A couple of other tips. Think light in the tail. I do not know if it is possible to build this plane without adding nose weight but I am doing my best! I have eliminated a great deal of the wood in the tail, and I also chose all of the lightest sticks I could for the epenages. I have run cables back for the controls and all of my servos will be in the tank compartment. My dummy engine is not particularily light either. Everything that has any significant weight value will be ahead of the CG.
I will be using a tailwheel though (as blasphemous as it is!). I fly off of runways and am not planning on entering the scale masters so I want to add to the enjoyment factor and I have never liked not having tailwheels, especially if there is a little wind. I will find out soon as I am on pace to have her covered by the end of the week. It may be too cold to actually add the clear dope but I can still put on my fabric with the tacky glue that Glenn suppplies.

Yes it is blasphemy, but I can understand your concern on a hard surface. Have you considered adding a small piece of tubing to the end of a tail skid for hard surfaces? This may cut down your weight and keep it more kosher. I have only flown off grass runways and I am very comfortable. but I would be a little concerned flying my Eindecker off a hard surface.

So after a year of construction I am now finally beginning to apply my Losenge fabric. Having hand painted this before I want to reiterate how wonderful a product Glenn has provided us with. It is a little expensive but I think it is actually pretty close to what Solartex costs. Right now I have it soaking in the fabric softner then off to the washer and dryer and then the iron. I have actually really been looking forward to this part of the build.
As for the tail wheel, I am pretty much commited to it at this point and it dosen't bother me having it back there. I have never noticed the one on my triplane and neither has anyone else. Well one guy did one time, he told me I was smart for adding it and I think he was right.
I wish I had a grass field to fly off of but I do not. The WW1 planes really seem to prefer it.
Now back to the washtub!

I have my fusalage and wheels covered now. I have to say I love the way this fabric looks. I even like putting it on. One of the things I like is how the colors are "soft" and they have sort of a pastel feel about them. There is a natural "antique" quality about how the fabric looks and it is turning my DVII into a work of art. The first coat of dope sure sucks up a lot and I hope I do not run out. I am using the butyrate and nitrate dope from Randolph's. This was purchased from Aircraft spruce and supply and is designed for full scale planes. It was actually cheaper than Sig. I have a lot of experience with Sig dopes and they may actually perform better but I went with Randoph's as I heard good things about it. I will end up with around 6-8 coats by the time I am done I think. My next big obstacle is to locate a sewing machine for cheap as I do not want to spend much on that. I do not have much use for a sewing machine! I will post some pics but I need to charge my camera.

I have almost all of my sewing done and I must say I think I am getting a little loopy from the dope (paint). This is the largest aircraft project I have undertaken so far but I think it will be worth it in the end. It is tough for me to get good pics because this thing is so big! Notice the cotter pins on the axels. This works really cool.

DV11 sprung u/c .Make rear legs and crosspiece from a single piece of wire, and the front legs from one piece also .Leave thhe horizontal pieces that meet at the axles longer than needed. Bind with wire-solder and cut off each horizontal piece leaving them long enough to act as anchors for the elastic shock absorbers.Lay axle on top using your own method of limiting upward travel .

I'm ready to cover my AZ Models wings with AZ lozenge fabric. The semi transparent fabric has me worried. I understand from your post that you first covered with SolarTex . Was this to make the rag opaque? What color SolarTex do you suggest?

Here are a couple of recent progress. The bottom wing has one coat of nitrate dope. I will let it dry overnite, give it a brushing of some wet 400 grit and put on another coat of nitrate. Then it will start getting the butyrate to shrink it tight. Tacky glue used to initially adhere the fabric. I just cannot get over how cool this looks. I hope the pics can do it some justice.

Here are pics of my DVII now complete. I know this is an old thread but this took a while to finish. G-38 for power, Proctor engine, Torrence 5 color fabric, 22 lbs. All of the radio is as far forward as it will go. I think I am just a little tail heavy as the nose is just slightly up at the 5" mark on the top wing.

Here are a couple of mine and one of a fellow club member who scratch built his in 1/5th scale.

A bit of unsolicited advice though, shim your engine down a bit more than you think you need. Mine (and others that I have heard about) wants to climb at any throttle setting above 1/4. This requires all the down trim and a bit of stick for level flight. I spoke with Dave at Balsa USA and that was the advice that he gave me. I have not yet implimented this yet though, but will this summer.

To those of you who have a G-38 in your DVIIs, could you post some prop/ rpm figures? As the weight of my DVII keeps inching up, I am getting a little worried. However, I just talked to Proctor and they said they thought I would be fine with the power I have in the 40cc Briggs.
